P0322
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0322, P0336
Crankshaft position sensor, control module input incorrect or absent
Fault Symptom.
Engine will not start, erratic running, misfiring.
Condition
A diagnostic trouble code will be generated on starting if the position sensor signal is absent (open circuit) and when driving if the ribs of the perforated disc are incorrectly read.
NOTE: Diagnostic trouble code P0322 will Always be generated when the ignition switch is in the ON position. As soon as pulses are emitted by the crankshaft position sensor when the starter motor is in operation, this trouble code will be cleared Automatically.
Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Unplug the crankshaft position sensor's 3-pin connector.
Check the resistance of the crankshaft position sensor by taking a reading across pins 1 and 2 of the sensor's male connector.
- The nominal resistance is 540 ± 55 ohms.
2. Run the starter motor and simultaneously take a reading on the output of the crankshaft position sensor.
Connect a voltmeter across pins 1 and 2 of the sensor's male connector.
- Nominal values are about 2 V AC and about 200 Hz.
If the measured value is correct, continue with step 4.
If the measured value is incorrect, continue with step 3.
3. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
Check:
- that the sensor tip is not soiled with metal filings, etc.
- that the perforated disc is firmly secured to the crankshaft (prise it carefully with a screwdriver).
Brush off any metal filings, etc.
If the perforated disc is loose, repair as necessary.
If there is no relevant cause of the fault, fit a new crankshaft position sensor.
4. Check the crankshaft position sensor's electrical interface, female connector.
^ Check the crankshaft position sensors ground and screening connections.
Ignition switch in the ON position.
Connect the test lamp across:
- pin 2 and battery positive
- pin 3 and battery positive
The test lamp should light up.
If it does not, restore the lead in question to proper working order (or replace it).
^ Check the lead between pin 49 of the control module connector and pin 1 for continuity, a short circuit and possible stray currents.
5. Clear the diagnostic trouble code and drive the car to see whether the DTC is generated again.
If the diagnostic trouble code is generated again, continue at "Procedure Before ECM Replacement". Component Tests
If the trouble code is not generated again the remedial measure taken was correct, otherwise the fault is of intermittent type.
