DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
Cars for certain markets are equipped with a factory fitted anti-theft alarm. Operated by a remote control unit, the alarm is programmable so that it can satisfy the various regulations and legal requirements of different countries.
Two versions of the alarm are available:
^ Anti-theft alarm
^ Anti-theft alarm with Vehicle Security System (VSS), which is an alarm with an immobilization function.
Most of the functions are identical on both types of alarm but there are some important differences between the two.
3-circuit breaking is used by the "Anti-theft alarm" system. By blocking the car's starter motor, fuel supply and engine management system, this prevents the engine from being started.
Immobilization is used by the "Anti-theft alarm with VSS" system. This prevents unauthorized starting of the car via the engine management system.
Visual/audible alarms are set off when the alarm is triggered.
An LED on the left-hand loudspeaker grille indicates the status of the alarm.
Operation
Arming of the alarm is carried out pressing once on the remote control unit's left-hand button. This also locks the central locking system. Anti-theft alarms without VSS can also be operated with the car key (the car key function is programmable).
Disarming is carried out by pressing the button once again, which will unlock the doors. It is possible to open the tailgate only when the alarm is armed. This is done by pressing the right-hand button on the remote control unit.
When the alarm is armed, activation of the anti-theft alarm will be delayed for 10 seconds. During this time the passenger doors (not the driver's door), bonnet and tailgate can be opened or be open without the alarm going off.
During the delay period, the LED remains on continuously and then starts flashing at the rate of 1 flash every 2 seconds when the alarm is activated.
Doors
Anti-theft alarm without VSS: With the driver's door open or the ignition switch in the Drive position, the car cannot be locked or unlocked nor armed or disarmed by means of the remote control unit.
Anti-theft alarm with VSS: With the driver's door open or the ignition switch in the Drive position, the car cannot be armed nor locked or unlocked by means of the remote control unit. On the other hand, the alarm can always be disarmed if a door is open. If a passenger's door, bonnet or tailgate is open or opened during the delay period and remains open for more than 10 seconds, the door/bonnet/tailgate will be excluded from monitoring.
When the door, bonnet or tailgate is closed, a new delay period starts for the door/bonnet/tailgate concerned. The LED will remain on continuously.
If the driver's door is opened during the delay period, the alarm will be automatically disarmed.
Tailgate
By pressing the right-hand button on the remote control unit it is possible to open the tailgate when the alarm is armed without setting off the alarm. The tailgate will then be excluded from monitoring.
If the tailgate is opened with the key, the alarm will be set off.
When the tailgate is later closed, a new delay period will start for the tailgate only.
The alarm will still be armed on the other doors and bonnet.
Ignition Switch
It is not possible to arm the alarm when the ignition switch is in the Drive position.
If the ignition switch is turned to the Drive position during the delay period, the alarm will be disarmed.
When the alarm is armed it will be set off if the ignition switch is turned to the Drive or Start position.
Control Module
Control module 289 monitors and controls the "Anti-theft alarm" system.
Control module 583 monitors and controls the "Anti-theft alarm with VSS" system.
The systems incorporate the following main components:
^ Control module 289/583.
^ Ignition switch 20 (Anti-theft alarm with VSS).
^ Door switches 54.
^ Luggage compartment switch 56.
^ Door switch, driver's door, pictogram 208D.
^ Horn 275.
^ Bonnet switch 276.
^ LED 305.
^ Glass breakage sensor (integral with the roof lamp) 451.
^ Starter motor relay 452 (Anti-theft alarm without VSS).
^ Aerial for remote control unit 582.
The anti-theft alarms also utilize some of the car's regular components, see the relevant wiring diagram.
Power Supply
Anti-theft Alarm Without VSS
The anti-theft alarm's control module is supplied with current (+30 circuit) directly without any fuses in the circuit. On cars for certain markets the control module is supplied with current (+30 circuit) via fuse 19.
The control module is supplied with current (+15 circuit) from distribution terminal 159.
The control module is supplied with current (+50 circuit) from ignition switch 20.
The main grounding connection is control module pin 13.
Anti-theft Alarm With VSS
The anti-theft alarm's control module is supplied with current (+30 circuit) via fuse 19.
Current (+30 circuit) intended for the direction indicators is supplied to the control module via fuse 22.
Current (+15 circuit) is supplied to the control module from distribution terminal 159.
The control module is supplied with current (+B voltage) from ignition switch 20.
The main grounding connection is control module pin 13.
