DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
Current is supplied to brake lights switch 29 via fuse 24. When the switch is activated, current is supplied to brake lights 30 via filament monitor 228a.

Brake lights on a trailer are supplied with current directly from the brake lights switch via towbar connector 258.

Should any brake light bulb fail, filament monitor terminal C1 will be grounded. Since positive current is applied to terminal 9 of the pictogram, the central warning lamp and the rear lights indicator lamps will light up. See also the Pictogram-Filament monitor.

High-Level Brake Light 30RC
On cars with a high-level brake light, the filament monitor has an extra circuit for monitoring brake light 109. (Since the high-level brake light on CS models has 4 bulbs, in most cases at least 2 of them must have failed for the pictogram to light up.) If the bulb (or bulbs in the case of CS models) fails, terminal C1 will be grounded and the central warning lamp and the rear lighting indicator lamps in the pictogram will light up. High-level brake lights are not allowed in some markets. Cable 132D is available in all markets so that a high-level brake light can be fitted if the relay is changed for one with a suitable logic circuit (for high-level brake lights).

Reset Memory
The filament monitor incorporates a circuit for monitoring brake lights switch 29. The circuit is supplied with current from distribution terminal 159 (+15 circuit). If in proper working order, the pictogram's warning lamp for the rear lights should light up when the ignition is switched on and remain on until the brake pedal is depressed.

FAULT DIAGNOSIS HINTS
1. Check that fuse 24 is intact and supplied with current.
2. Check that brake lights switch 29 is supplied with current.
3. Activate the brake lights switch. Check that the bulbs are OK and supplied with current and also check the ground connection of each lamp.
4. Check the filament monitor.
5. Check the connectors, wiring and ground connections.

IMPORTANT: When changing the bulbs, make sure that the new bulbs are of the correct rating. Otherwise, the lamps in the pictogram may light up due to imbalance in the filament monitor coil.
