Timing Components: Testing and Inspection
CHECKING VALVE TIMING
1. Lift the power steering servo oil reservoir and free the lead from the torque arm engine mounting.
2. Remove the torque arm.
3. Remove the servo line clamp from the torque arm engine mounting and remove the engine mounting.
4. Slightly slacken the pulley bolts. Release the load from the belt tensioner by turning the belt tensioner pulley retaining screw forwards in the car using a 15 mm wrench. Remove the belt from the coolant pump pulley and carefully release the belt tensioner.
5. Detach the other hoses from the expansion tank and remove the coolant pump pulley.
6. Remove the upper part of the generator air intake and remove the belt tensioner.
7. Remove the power steering servo pump.
8. Remove the timing cover.
9. Remove the crankshaft pulley (remove the six bolts, not the center bolt).
NOTE: The crankshaft should always be carefully turned in the direction of engine rotation-never against the direction of engine rotation.
10. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation until just before the zero mark. The grooves on the camshaft sprockets should be just in front of the marks on the rear timing cover.
11. Install locking tool KM-800-10 to the crankshaft and turn the crankshaft carefully in the direction of engine rotation until the arm is against the coolant pump flange and tighten it.
NOTE: The camshaft sprockets for cylinders 1-3-5 have the numbers 1 and 2 and the camshaft sprockets for cylinders 2-4-6 have the numbers 3 and 4. The numbers are right next to the groove markings.
12. Place inspection gauge KM-800-20 on camshaft sprockets 3 and 4. The markings on camshaft sprockets 3 and 4 must be exactly aligned with the markings on the inspection gauge. Place inspection gauge KM-800-20 on camshaft sprockets 1 and 2. The markings on camshaft sprockets 1 and 2 must be exactly aligned with the markings on the inspection gauge. If the markings are not aligned, the valve-gear timing must be adjusted.
13. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the timing cover and tighten mounting bolts to 8 Nm (6 ft. lbs.).
15. Install the power steering servo pump.
16. Install the belt tensioner and tighten mounting bolt to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
17. Install the upper part of the generator air intake.
18. Install the coolant pump pulley and connect the upper hose to the expansion tank.
19. Relieve the load from the belt tensioner by turning the belt tensioner pulley locking bolt forwards in the car using a 15 mm wrench. Install the belt on the coolant pump pulley and check the other pulleys. Carefully release the belt tensioner.
20. Install the torque arm engine mounting and refit the servo line clamp.
21. Install the torque arm, bolt the lead to the torque arm engine mounting and hook on the power steering servo oil reservoir.
