Usage Recommendations
1. STARTING THE ENGINE
- The vehicle can only be started in selector lever positions P and N.
2. DRIVING OFF
- Set the selector lever to R, D, 3, 2, or 1. Wait until drive is engaged, i.e. power is being transmitted from the engine to the driven wheels, before depressing the accelerator pedal.
3. SELECTOR LEVER POSITIONS (P-R-N-D-3-2-1)
- In some vehicles, a latch on the selector lever must be released before the lever can be moved to another position (see vehicle owner's manual). This latch serves as an extra safety device to prevent the selector from being moved to certain positions by mistake.
4. PARKING POSITION P
- This position must not be selected until the vehicle is stationary. The parking pawl is engaged, and the driven wheels are blocked to prevent the car from moving. The hand brake must always be applied when the car is parked.
5. REVERSE R
- Reverse gear should only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary. If the selector lever is inadvertently moved to position R while the vehicle is moving forward, a hydraulic interlock prevents reverse gear from being engaged until vehicle speed drops below a certain minimum.
6. NEUTRAL N
- Corresponds to the neutral position on a manual gearbox and should not be selected while driving to avoid interrupting the power flow between the engine and the driven wheels. If the selector lever is moved to N while the car is travelling, drive position may only be selected when the accelerator pedal is fully released and the throttle closed.
7. SELECTOR POSITION D
- This is the normal driving position. The car will always pull away in 1st gear. During acceleration, the transmission will automatically shift up to higher gears.
- The shift points are selected provide an optimum relationship between favorable fuel consumption and high driving comfort, and they depend on road. The 4th gear is an economy gear, i.e. engine speed, fuel consumption and noise level are reduced. Top speed is achieved in 4th gear.
8. SELECTOR LEVER POSITION 3
- Shifting up and down between the first three gears takes place automatically, but hydraulic lock-up prevents upshift to 4th.
- If the selector lever is moved from D to position 3, downshift to 3rd will take place immediately. This gear change is independent of road speed.
CAUTION: When the car is travailing at top speed, the selector lever must not be moved to position 3.
9. SELECTOR LEVER POSITION 2
- Automatic shifting will only take place between 1st and 2nd. Due to engine braking, this position is suitable for long uphill and downhill slopes.
- If the selector lever is moved from position D or 3 to position 2, downshift to 2nd does not take place until speed drops below a certain limit.
10. SELECTOR LEVER POSITION 1
- This position should only be selected on extremely steep uphill or downhill gradients. The car will travel in 1st only and full engine braking will be available.
- If the selector lever is moved to position 1 when the car is travelling, downshift to 1st will take place only after the speed of the car has dropped below a certain limit.
11. KICK-DOWN
- The kick-down feature permits faster acceleration up to a certain speed range. This feature is obtained when the accelerator is fully depressed beyond wide open throttle position. Depending on road speed, downshift will then take place immediately and the engine output will be used to provide maximum acceleration, irrespective of fuel consumption. Upshift to the next gear will take place when the engine has reached approximately maximum speed.
