Subject:
Adjusting Seat Height at Customer Request

Application:
All 9000

Some customers may find that the seat height on their 9000 is too high, especially if the vehicle is equipped with a sunroof. To address this complaint, new softer foam cushions and springs have been developed. Follow the instructions below to install these new parts.

Cars Affected:

All 9000 models

Parts:

Foam cushion, fabric 48 01 429
Foam cushion, leather 48 01 437
Heating pad, fabric upholstery 40 63 871
Heating pad, leather upholstery 40 63 855
Spring (6) 47 18 391

Action for Electrically Adjustable Seat:

1. Remove the seat from the car. Remove the seat covering and foam cushion. Follow instructions in Service Manual 8:2 Interior equipment, Section 852 Seats.

2. Unhook the six front springs on the seat spring base, taking care to note their position. See Figure 2.

3. Fit the new springs, P/N 47 18 391. See Figure 2.

4. Remove the rubber bushings. See Figure 2.

5. Use heavy-duty cable ties to secure the spring base to the seat frame's tubular front cross-member. See Figure 2.

6. Fit the new foam cushion and heating pad.

7. Refit the seat covering and reinstall the seat in the car.

Action for Manually Adjustable Seat:

1. Remove the seat from the car. Remove the seat covering and foam cushion. Follow instructions in Service Manual Section 8:2 Interior equipment, Section 852 Seats.

2. Remove the clamps and lift out the camshaft for vertical adjustment of the front of the seat. See Figure 3.

3. Remove the two front springs and scrap them. See Figure 3.

4. Remove the six front springs securing the spring base as shown in Figure 3, taking care to note their positions. See Figure 3.

5. Lift out the spring base and remove the thick transverse wire A (see Figure 3) from the spring base.

6. Refit the spring base and fit the new springs as shown. The two springs at the right and the device for adjusting the height of the front of the seat should not be refilled. See Figure 3.

Important
The device for adjusting the height of the front of the seat can be refilled if the customer requires it. However, they may notice a change in seating comfort.

After these modifications have been carried out, the seat occupant will sit lower down in the middle of the seat. Some customers will experience appreciable discomfort as the device for adjusting the height of the front of the seat presses against their thighs.

7. Use cable ties to fasten the spring base to the seat frame's cross-member. See Figure 3.

8. Fit the new foam cushion and heating pad.

9. Refit the seat covering and reinstall the seat in the car.

Warranty Information:

This is NOT a warranty matter. However, should a customer request this modification, we suggest the following retail time be charged:

Electrically adjustable seat: 1.5

Manually adjustable seat: 1.9

(Includes R & R seat).

NOTE:
The customer should be made aware of the cosmetic effect this modification will have on manually adjustable seats. The seat height adjuster lever arm will be removed and a hole in the upholstery will be left. If the lever is reinstalled, the owner will experience considerable discomfort.
