Cars With Airbag - SRS

Cars with an undetonated airbag
Airbags are classed as pyrotechnical articles and should be handled and stored in accordance with the laws and regulations that are applicable in the country concerned.

Apart from the danger of personal injury, an undetonated airbag could cause damage or environmental pollution during the course of the scrapping and recycling process.

Scrap the airbag as described in the instructions on page 26. ZZZZZZZ

Car with detonated airbag
When the airbag is detonated, talc and combustion residue are released in the form of dust particles. These particles may contain traces of caustic soda. Clean a car with detonated airbag in accordance with the instructions on page 28. ZZZZZZZ

WARNING:
Always disconnect the negative cable from the battery and wait 30 minutes before starting work on the airbag.

Do not expose a car with airbag to extreme heat or a naked flame.

Wear protective goggles and gloves when working on and handling a detonated airbag.

Parts incorporated in the airbag system should never under any circumstances be removed from the car and fitted in another car.

Marking cars with airbag
Marking may be in the form of a symbol, text, identification number or combination of these. Text occurring in Saab cars may be SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) or Airbag.

A number of warning and informative labels are affixed to the car. They tell you that the car is equipped with an airbag. Follow the recommendations to be sure of working safely on the car.

Important: Bear in mind that labels and components carrying a marking may disappear or wear out with the passage of time.

The marking may differ on different car models and in different model years.

Marking on the Saab 900
The letters "SRS" are embossed on the upper part of the dashboard on cars with a passenger airbag.

A label is affixed to the coil spring.

A warning text is affixed to the rear of the steering wheel center pad (airbag module).

A warning label is affixed to the B pillar on the driver 5 side and is visible when the door is open. This applies to model year 1993 and earlier cars.

On 1994 and later cars:
The letters "SRS" are embossed on the top of the dashboard on cars equipped with a passenger airbag.

A warning label is affixed to the side of the dashboard on the driver and passenger sides.

A warning text is affixed to the side of the passenger airbag.

The letters "SRS" are embossed on the upper part of the dashboard on cars with a passenger airbag. Marking may additionally occur in the engine bay, on the windscreen, on the pillar beside the windscreen (A pillar), adjacent to or in the space for passengers.

An "SRS" symbol is located on the lower left-hand corner of the windscreen. In the event of an accident, this symbol informs rescue personnel that the car is equipped with an airbag.

The steering wheel on cars with an airbag
Cars with an airbag have a steering wheel of special design. The center of the steering wheel is rectangular and fairly large. A ribbed covering of soft plastic material embossed with the letters "SRS" is mounted over the space for the airbag.

On the passenger side it will be necessary to observe any departure in design from the standard dashboard. The Saab 9000 normally has no glove box and there may be some marking on the dashboard.
