1 Apply the handbrake 1 notch.
2 Raise the car so that the rear wheels can spin freely.
3 Tighten the adjusting nut on the handbrake lever through the hole in the front wall behind the mat in the storage compartment in the centre console until the brakes just begin to take effect.

Technical description, vacuum pump, page 44
In order to further improve the braking in the Saab 9-5 2.0 and 2.3 with automatic transmission, a vacuum pump has been introduced. This pump supplies the brake servo with a vacuum in driving conditions where the engine cannot achieve this unaided.
The pump starts up at a vacuum less than 0.35 bar and switches off at 0.4 bar.
The following factors must be met for the pump to start:
^ Ignition on
^ Vacuum as above
The pump is located in front of the battery.
Fault diagnosis, fault symptom, vacuum pump, brake system
Fault diagnosis hints
1 Check fuses 11 and 16 and check power supply to these.
2 Short circuit the pressure switch and check whether the engine starts.
3 Check connectors, wiring harnesses and ground connections.
