Heater Core: Service and Repair
Heat exchanger
To Remove
1 Detach the heat exchanger coolant hoses from the engine.
Place a vessel under the car to collect the coolant.
2 Blow into the connection on the cylinder head with compressed air to empty coolant from the heat exchanger.
3 Remove the glove compartment, see Body and Frame, Interior Trim. Interior Moulding / Trim
Remove the trim from the side of the center console.
4 Release the air outlet from the air duct.
5 Detach the PAD connector for the piping to the heat exchanger.
6 Unscrew the heat exchanger housing, 4 bolts. Remove the heat exchanger.
To Fit
1 Fit the heat exchanger, 4 bolts.
2 Lubricate new O-rings with synthetic vaseline. Fit the O-rings on the pipes to the heat exchanger.
3 Connect the pipes to the heat exchanger and screw on the PAD connector.
4 Fit the air outlet to the air duct.
NOTE: Place butyl tape in the join between the air duct and the climate housing.
5 Replace the side trim on the center console. Fit the glove box, see Body and Frame, Interior Trim. Interior Moulding / Trim
6 Connect the heat exchanger coolant hoses to the connections on the engine.
7 Refill coolant.
8 Bleed the system as follows:
Fill the system to MAX level and replace the pressure cap. Start the engine and warm it up by varying the engine speed until the radiator fan operates. Remove the pressure cap and top up the coolant to MAX level again.
Replace the pressure cap and let the engine run at varying speeds until the radiator fan has started a further three times. Stop the engine and refill to MAX level is necessary.
Important
If the car is equipped with A/C, the air conditioning should be turned off. Otherwise, the air conditioning may start the radiator fan before the engine has warmed up.
