Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Function Test

Once all connections are made, it's time for a functional check:

1 With the ignition key off and the telephone placed in the cradle, the telephone battery should indicate recharging.

2 When the key is turned to the "ON" position, the telephone should indicate "hands-free" operation.

3 When a call is placed, the radio (if on) display on the SID unit should disappear, the radio volume should mute, and "Telephone" should appear. Telephone volume should come through the car's radio speakers and can be adjusted with the radio volume controls, either on the radio or on the steering wheel.

4 When a call is received, the first indication will be the radio volume muting (if on) and a telephone "ring" signal will be heard through the radio speakers. Pushing the telephone's "SEND" button will answer the telephone. Conversation should take place using the hands-free system. To end the call, push the "END" button on the telephone.

Miscellaneous Information:

1 If initial telephone volume through the system is either too high or too low, it can be adjusted as follows:

A With ignition key on, radio off, hold in the "WB" button while turning the radio on.

B On SID, a display will indicate one of four (4) programmable features. Press the "SEEK" button repeatedly until "TEL VOL" is seen. A number from 0-30 will be displayed. This represents the current setting, with 30 being the loudest. Turning the volume knob on the radio adjusts the setting. The Factory setting is 14.

C After the desired setting is reached, it can be saved by either waiting for a period of 10 seconds, after which the radio returns to normal operation, or, press the "WB" or any other button on the lower row.

2 When dialing a number before placing a call, the "chimes" or "beeps" normally heard when dialing will not be heard since the telephone is not yet connected to the audio system. If this feature is desired, a separate, remote speaker must be installed and wired parallel to pins # 7 and # 8. Keep in mind that when this extra speaker is used, radio conversation will be carried and will not be adjustable through the car's radio controls.

3 If a telephone conversation is taking place when the car is turned off and the key removed from the ignition, the phone will be disconnected.

4 If the car is shut off and the key is removed with the phone in the cradle, the phone will turn off after a few seconds if it is not removed from the cradle.
