False diagnostic trouble codes from side airbag

Cars affected
Saab 9-5 M99 up to and including X3006695.

Background
On occasions, the AIR BAG lamp may go on without the presence of a permanent fault in the airbag system. The fault can be insufficient crimping of cable lugs in the electrical harness. Diagnostic trouble code B2863 or B2868 will then be generated.

In the event of customer complaints that the AIR BAG lamp lights or your technician finds such DTC's in Tech 2, the following procedure must be carried out on the driver and passenger seats.

Note:
Provided the VIN limits are applicable, the measures described in SI 850-2077 "False diagnostic trouble codes in Airbag system (SRS)" are also to be carried out.

79 71 880 Cable tie (2 per car)

Procedure

1. Turn ignition OFF.

2. Remove the driver's seat as described in WIS; Body; Seats; Front seat. Place the seat on a clean workbench.





3. Undo the straps holding the bottom of the backrest upholstery.

Detach the upholstery strips at the bottom.

4. Extract the cables through the opening. Pull out the sheet from the backrest upholstery.





5. Undo the rear of the backrest upholstery by loosening the upholstery strip along the sides and folding the upholstery to the side.

6. Undo the upholstery strip along the rear edge of the backrest frame.





7. Unplug the connector from the side airbag.

8. Remove the wiring harness and protective hose from the clips.

Ventilated seat: Remove the screw holding the fan cowling to enable removal of the wiring harness.





9. Remove the 29-pin connector from the holder under the seat.

10. Cut the cable tie holding the wiring harness.





11. Extract the yellow connector from the 29-pin connector.





12. Put the new wiring harness in place.

13. Plug in the side airbag connector.

14. Fit the new wiring harness into the cups.

Ventilated seat: Screw on the fan cowling.





15. Insert the yellow connector into the 29-pin connector Fit the 29-pin connector into the holder

16. Fit cable tie.





17. Replace the upholstery strip along the rear edge of the backrest frame.

18. Fit the rear of the backrest upholstery by fastening the upholstery strip along the sides.





19. Insert the sheet into the backrest upholstery.

20. Pull the cables through the opening in the backrest upholstery and fasten the upholstery strip at the bottom.

21. Fasten the straps on the bottom of the backrest upholstery under the seat cushion.

22. Fit the driver's seat as described in WIS; Body; Seats; Front seat.

23. Repeat steps 2-22 for the passenger seat.

24. Connect the diagnostic tool.

25. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

26. Clear diagnostic trouble codes and check with the diagnostic tool that the resistance in the SRS circuit is 2.5 +/- 0.3 ohms in each seat.

Disconnect the diagnostic tool.

27. Start engine and see if AIR BAG lamp indicates a fault.
