Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Modification Instruction

Background

The Trionic T7 engine control modules replaced under Recall 724 on MY2000 9-5 Aero models may have received an incorrect program prior to shipment to dealers. This error is invisible to the customer, with the exception of the loss of the upshift indicator lamp on manual gearbox models. Correctly programmed units are identified with a red dot on the ECM label, or by checking the software version with Tech 2.

Symptom

Upshift indicator lamp may not illuminate on manual gearbox equipped vehicles.

Cars affected

Saab 2000 9-5 Aero models only, within the following VIN Serial No. Ranges:

Y3000001 - Y3046304

Owner Notification

As much as possible, we request that dealers be alert for affected vehicles and perform Recall 726 as required.

Please note that vehicles in which a T7 ECM is going to be replaced on a warranty claim with a repair date on or after January 1, 2001, require Recall 724 (see MI 248-2262) and will not be shown as needing Recall 726.

Only vehicles that have had Recall 724 performed prior to January 1, 2001 will show open for Recall 726 on your IRIS On-Line Recall & Service Campaign Inquiry.

Please check your IRIS On-Line Recall & Service Campaign Inquiry for open campaigns and submit claims promptly.

Procedure

If a 2000 9-5 Aero comes into your service department that has previously had Recall 724 completed, check the version of T7 software using the following procedure:

1 Connect Tech 2, turn the ignition on.

2 From the Tech 2 Main Menu, select "Diagnosis", "Model Year 2000", "9-5", "Engine", "Trionic", "System Information".

3 Look for "Software Version".
EB2VS77C.56D is the INCORRECT version and this ECM must be replaced.
EB2VS77C.56C is the CORRECT version and no further action is necessary.

4 If the control module is to be changed, see WIS, Engine - Trionic 17 - Adjustment/replacement - Control module.

Important
A special programming procedure is used when performing this Recall. You must use Tech 2 version 37.000 or a later version.

Programming the immobilizer code

1 Connect Tech 2 to the car's data link connector. Turn the ignition ON.

2 Select "(FO): Diagnostics" from the main menu.

3 Select "Model Year" and "Vehicle Type".

4 Select "(F2): Body" from the menu.

5 Select "TWICE" (Theft Warning Central Electronics).

6 Start programming of the immobilizer by selecting "Immobilization" (F2) from the menu.

7 Follow the instructions on Tech 2. The procedure is complete when the message "Immobilizer code programmed" is displayed.

8 Erase any diagnostic trouble codes. Fuse 17 may need to be removed and refitted for communication with Tech 2 to be possible.

Checking and resetting

1 Switch off Tech 2 and turn the ignition OFF.

2 Start the engine.

3 If the engine does not start, turn off the ignition and then remove and refit fuse 17.

4 Start the engine. Depress the accelerator and then check if any new diagnostic trouble codes have been generated. Rectify and erase any diagnostic trouble codes.

5 Turn the ignition OFF and wait 10 seconds. Check that the throttle is not in limp-home mode as follows:

a Remove the upper engine cover.

b Remove the cover from the throttle body.

c Turn the pedal arm clockwise.

d Check that the throttle arm does not make the reciprocal movement when the pedal arm is turned.

e To reset limp-home mode, if necessary see WIS - Engine - Trionic T7 - Adjustment/replacement - Resetting triggered limp-home solenoid.

f Fit the cover over the throttle body and the upper engine cover.

Marking the campaign plate
