Drivetrain - Rear Differential Moan/Groan on Turns
Bulletin No.: 06-04-20-001Date: January 06, 2006
TECHNICAL
Subject:
Moan and/or Groan Noise From Rear Axle Differential On Turns (Replace Rear Differential Limited Slip Case)
Models:
2005 Saab 9-7X
with Limited Slip Rear Differential (RPO G86)
Attention:
This Bulletin ONLY applies to 2005 Saab 9-7X vehicles with RPO G86.
Condition
Some customers may comment on a moan and/or groan noise from the rear end of the vehicle while making turns.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a slip/stick condition between the limited slip differential clutch plates within the rear axle case assembly.
Correction
A new zero preload limited slip differential case assembly has been released for 2005 model year only with changes in the clutch plates to eliminate this condition. Because changes in the clutch stack thickness have caused changes in the differential side gears and case, this differential case unit must be changed as an assembly.
Note:
^ DO NOT REUSE the ring gear retaining bolts. Always replace the ring gear retaining bolts when removing the ring gear from the case. Failure to replace the ring gear retaining bolts may result in an improper torque specification.
^ Always inspect the Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Inspection. Failure to inspect the contact pattern may result in a premature rear axle failure and / or a noise condition.
Important:
^ The differential side bearing preload adjustment must be completed before the backlash adjustment can be started.
^ In order to maintain the original backlash, adjust the differential case side bearing preload by changing the thickness of the left and the right side shim packs equally.
^ Measure the service shims and the spacers one at a time. Add the measurements together in order to obtain the total thickness of the left or the right side shim pack.
^ Do not use or reuse the original cast iron production shims. Use service shims and spacers listed in the parts table below.
^ Before installation of the differential assembly, ensure that the side bearing surfaces in the axle housing are clean and free of burrs. If the original bearings are to be reused, the original bearing cups must also be used.
Replace the differential case carrier with P/N 19121991.
