Bulletin No.: 08-08-67-003

Date: February 19, 2008

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Rubbing, Popping or Itch Type Noise at Right Rear Upper Corner of Vehicle (Adjust Sheet Metal)

Models:
2007-2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
2007-2008 GMC Envoy
2007-2008 Saab 9-7X

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rubbing pop/snap or itch type noise from the upper right rear corner ("D" Pillar) of the vehicle.

Cause

There may be contact between the inner and outer sheet metal in the upper right rear corner of the vehicle. Refer to the arrow in the illustration above for location of the noise.

Road Test

This concern can typically be duplicated when the body is in a twisting situation.

The condition can best be duplicated by rolling one side of the vehicle over a bump 100 mm (4 in) to 150 mm (6 in) high and keeping the other side on flat ground at low speeds.

It may be necessary to ride in the rear of the vehicle to verify the location.

Chassis ears are somewhat ineffective as the noise travels in the structure readily.

Correction

Lower the headliner following procedures in SI.

Purchase a 300 mm (12 in) screwdriver locally. Heat the screwdriver and bend at the location shown in the illustration above. Note that some of these pictures are from a cutaway section of the vehicle for illustration purposes.

Looking rearward inside the upper rail you are going to want to separate the inner and outer sheet metal. Refer to the illustration above.

Insert the screwdriver through the slot in the upper right rear corner and tap the shank of the screwdriver rearward to force it between the inner and outer sheet metal.

Rock the screwdriver left to right to create clearance between the inner and outer sheet metal.

Inspect the radius on the outside for paint chipping. Touch up as necessary.

Test drive the vehicle to make sure that the noise is gone.

Spray the area where the screwdriver was inserted between the inner and outer sheet metal with 3M(TM) Rust Fighter-I Internal (Coating Compound).

Reinstall the headliner following procedures in SI.
