Steering Knuckle Replacement

^ SA91100C Tie Rod Separator
^ J 43631 Ball Joint Remover

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the wheel bearing.





3. Remove the outer tie rod to knuckle nut.





4. Using the SA91100C, separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.





5. Notice: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

Remove the lower control arm ball stud to steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut.
6. Lower the lower control arm to separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle. If necessary, use the J 43631.





7. Remove the strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts.
8. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure
1. Position the steering knuckle onto the lower control arm ball stud, while guiding the axle through the knuckle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the strut to knuckle bolts and nuts.

Tighten the bolts and nuts to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).





3. Important: The torque sequence must be followed in the order that is listed.

Install the lower control arm ball stud to steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut.
1 First Pass: Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
2 Reverse nut 3/4 turn
3 Second Pass: Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + 30 degrees.





4. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.

Tighten the nut to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).

5. Install the wheel bearing, brake rotor, brake caliper and front wheels.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Road test the vehicle in order to verify alignment. If a lead or pull is present, refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment.
