Subject: Hybrid Tensioner Primary Accessory Drive Pulley Bearing Noise, Rattle or Squeal Spring Tensioner Shoulder Bolt or Bracket Pivot Bolt Fatigue (Replace Drive Belt Tensioner)

All Equipped with Engine RPO LAT and Hybrid RPO HP7

Attention:
The drive belt idler pulley bracket pivot bolt is no longer serviced separately. If the pivot bolt needs replacement for any reason, the drive belt tensioner assembly MUST BE replaced with the new revised assembly.
Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to remove an Important statement above step 4 in the Correction information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 09-06-01-009A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
Condition
Some customers may comment about a rattle or squeal type noise coming from the engine.
Cause
This condition may be caused by one or more of the following:
- An issue with the drive belt tensioner pulley bearing.
- The drive belt idler pulley bracket pivot bolt experiencing fatigue.
- The spring tensioner bottom shoulder bolt experiencing fatigue.
Correction
Warning
To avoid personal injury, DO NOT remove the tensioner spring shipping clip until the tensioner is properly mounted and tightened to the engine and the accessory drive belt is installed and properly routed.
- The drive belt tensioner assembly (2) is delivered with a tensioner spring shipping clip (1) installed over and compressing the tensioner spring.
- Replace the drive belt tensioner assembly (1) ONLY as a complete assembly including the pivot bolt (2) and the serpentine belt.
- ANY TIME the drive belt tensioner spring bottom shoulder bolt (1) is removed or has previously been removed from the drive belt tensioner spring for ANY reason, the drive belt tensioner assembly MUST BE replaced with the new revised assembly. This bolt should NEVER be removed when servicing.
- ANY TIME the drive belt idler pulley bracket pivot bolt (1) has thread or hex head damage and needs replacement, the drive belt tensioner assembly MUST BE replaced with the new revised assembly.
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in SI.
2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in SI.
3. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement (LAT) in SI.
Important
It is critical to properly torque the pivot bolt (1). Excessive or insufficient tightening can lead to bolt fatigue or failure.
4. Install a new drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement (LAT) in SI.
5. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in SI.
6. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in SI.
