Repair Procedure

Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS):

^ 2008 model year Scion xB Repair Manual, Vehicle Exterior - Exterior Panels/Trim - "Exterior: Rocker Panel Moulding: Removal".

^ 2008 model year Scion xB Repair Manual, Vehicle Exterior - Exterior Panels/Trim - "Exterior: Rocker Panel Moulding: Installation".

1. Remove the rocker panel molding.

Be careful when removing the molding to prevent damage to the molding or the body.

2. Remove all remnants of the double-sided tape that may be stuck to the back side of the rocker panel molding.

3. Using clean dry paper towels and 3M General Purpose Adhesive cleaner (P/N 08984) or equivalent, thoroughly clean the rocker molding where the double-sided tape was attached.

^ It is very important to carefully read the cleaning instructions on the container.

^ Failure to read and follow the instructions may result in a "no stick" condition.

4. Once the attachment surface of the molding is clean and dry, apply 3M(TM) Primer (Adhesive Promoter) (P/N 4298UV), available from your local 3M(TM) automotive supplier.

Carefully follow the application instructions for the primer since improper application of the primer may result in a "no stick" condition of the double-sided tape.

5. Remove the backing paper on the double-sided tape and apply it to the rocker panel molding in the same location where the original tape was installed.

Tape Dimensions:

Thickness: 1.2 mm (0.05 in.)

Width: 12 mm (0.5 in.)

Length: 70 mm (2.76 in.)

6. Thoroughly clean the vehicle body where the double-sided tape makes contact.

7. Reinstall the rocker molding to the vehicle making sure to replace all broken clips, etc.

8. Once the molding is firmly attached to the vehicle body, use a rubber hand roller (3M(TM) Safety Walk" [P/N 903] hand roller or equivalent) to apply pressure to the molding for approximately 10-15 seconds. Use a back and forth rolling motion to apply force to the surface of the rocker molding (this removes any bubbles and assures that the tape surface is making full contact with the body). Roll the molding for approximately 10-15 seconds.

^ Failure to apply rolling pressure on the molding may result in poor adhesion of the molding.

^ After two hours, gently try pulling on the rear edge of the molding to see if the molding is still firmly attached to the body.

^ Do NOT apply high pulling force on the molding for at least 24 hours after the repair has been completed.
