Campaign - Cruise Control Kit Installation

SUBJECT:
Cruise Control Replacement Kit

Subaru of America, Inc. has determined that a number of 1999 Model Year Legacy Brighton vehicles, that have had optional cruise control systems installed, require the installation of a replacement cruise control kit. The kit contains parts necessary to replace dealer and port installed systems. The replacement kits are designed to improve the durability and eliminate possible wear of the power steering hose over an extended period of time/mileage.

Subaru of America, Inc. will provide all known owners of affected vehicles notification by First Class Mail. Owners will be requested to contact a Subaru Dealer to arrange for installation of the replacement cruise control kit.

VEHICLES INVOLVED





The affected vehicles are 1999 Model Year Legacy Brighton vehicles with Optional Cruise Control Systems. The respective Vehicle Identification Numbers are listed in Chart 1.





OWNER NOTIFICATION

SOA will prepare and mail an Owner Notification Letter to the owners of all potentially affected vehicles.

The Owner Notification Letter is scheduled for mailing on October 11, 1999.

DEALER PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to promptly correct all affected vehicles in accordance with the instructions in the service procedure section of this bulletin. Additionally, whenever a vehicle subject to this service program is taken into new or used vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the necessary steps to be sure the service program correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles sold since the date of the computer listing from your vehicle inventory and provide them with a copy of the owner notification letter and arrange to make the required correction according to the instructions in the service procedures section of this bulletin.

Dealers should install the Campaign Completion Label on all vehicles which have the service procedure completed. Additional quantities of the labels are available upon request to your regional office.

PARTS INFORMATION





Each Subaru dealer with vehicles affected by this service Program should order the replacement kit from your facing RDC.





Parts contained in the kit (and quantity): Cruise Control Pump (1), Bracket-A (1), Bracket-B (1), FT Screws (5), Vacuum Pipe (1), Clip-A (1).

This kit does not contain all of the parts for the Cruise Control System. This kit is used only for this service campaign which replaces the Cruise Control Pump Mounting Brackets and Vacuum Pipe.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

This information is for replacement of the Cruise Control Pump and the installation of the required brackets.

A) Removal of cruise control pump.





1) Remove the air intake duct (see figure 1).





2) Disconnect the wiring harness connector and vacuum hose from cruise control pump. (See figure 2)





3) Remove vacuum hose from vacuum actuator. Remove plastic vacuum pipe from multi-clips that are attached to bulkhead. (See figure 3)





4) Remove the two 10mm bolts * that attach the cruise control pump to the A/C receiver dryer and remove pump. (See figure 4)

*Note:
Retain bolts for reinstallation.

B) Installation of new pump.





5) Install new Vacuum Pipe to the multi-clips attached to the bulkhead. The end with the vacuum line attaches to the vacuum actuator. (See figure 5)





6) Install Bracket A between the A/C receiver dryer bracket and body. Secure Bracket A and receiver dryer bracket with the two 10-mm bolts (previously removed in figure 4). (See figure 6)
Torque bolts to: 5.9 to 8.9 Nm (0.6 to 0.9 kg-m, 4.3 to 6.5 ft-lb).





7) Remove two plastic plugs located in frame rail below A/C receiver dryer. Using two 10-mm bolts supplied, attach Bracket B. (See figure 7)
Torque bolts to 5.9 to 8.9 Nm (0.6 to 0.9 kg-m, 4.3 to 6.5 ft-lb).





8) Install cruise control pump to brackets using three 10-mm bolts supplied. (See figure 8)
Torque bolts to 5.9 to 8.9 Nm (0.6 to 0.9 kg-m, 4.3 to 6.5 ft-lb).





9) Connect wiring harness connector to cruise control pump. Connect vacuum hose of cruise control pump to vacuum pipe. Attach Clip A to vacuum pipe and wiring harness, secure Clip A to wiring harness using electrical tape. (See figure 9 and 10).

Road test vehicle for proper cruise control operation.

CLAIM REIMBURSEMENT AND ENTRY PROCEDURES

Credit to perform this service program will be based on the submission of properly completed repair order information. Dealers may enter the applicable claim information through their Dealer Communications System (DCS).

All properly submitted claims will receive an automatic credit of 0.8 labor hours for installation of the replacement Cruise Control Kit.

Parts will be reimbursed at dealer cost plus applicable handling allowance.
