Campaign - Brake Master Cylinder Inspection/Replacement

APPLICABILITY:
2000MY Legacy Vehicles.

SUBJECT:
Master Cylinder Bore Size

Subaru has determined that some 2000 model year Subaru Legacy vehicles were equipped in production with the incorrect Specification Master Cylinder. As a result, the customer may notice a lower brake pedal feel when applying the brakes. However, there will be no effect on brake performance at any time.

VEHICLES INVOLVED





The potentially affected vehicles are 2000 model year Legacy models only (please note that the Brighton Model is not affected). The affected vehicles are identified in Chart 1.





OWNER NOTIFICATION

SOA will prepare and mail an Owner Notification Letter to owners of the potentially affected vehicles. The owner notification is scheduled for March 10, 2000.

DEALER PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to promptly correct all affected vehicles in their inventory (new, used, demo) in accordance with the instructions in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin. Additionally, whenever a vehicle subject to this service program is taken into new or used vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the necessary steps to be sure the service program correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

PARTS INFORMATION





This Service Program involves the VIN# ranges that will need to be inspected and or replaced, SOA will not allocate parts to the dealers for this procedure. Dealers will arrange for parts replacement through normal parts channels and using the part number in Chart 2.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Inspection

Using a mirror, check the embossed stamping on the bottom of the master cylinder. 1 indicates a 1" bore master cylinder, 1-1/16 indicates a 1-1/16" bore master cylinder. If the master cylinder you are inspecting is embossed with a 1, follow the replacement procedure. If the master cylinder is embossed with 1-1/16, it DOES NOT need to be replaced.

Replacement Procedure

Repair the vehicle as follows:

Caution:
Be extremely careful not to spill brake fluid on any vehicle surface. Brake fluid will harm the painted surfaces. Be sure to protect any painted surface that may be potentially exposed during the repair process with an appropriate protective cover. Technicians should also wear safety glasses to protect their eyes during the performance of the following procedure.

1. Remove the master cylinder in accordance with the procedures in the appropriate Subaru Service Manual.

2. Install the replacement master cylinder in accordance with the procedures in the appropriate Subaru Service Manual.

3. Perform the brake/wheel cylinder air bleeding procedure in accordance with the procedures in the appropriate Subaru Service Manual.

4. Perform the ABS Sequence Control Air Bleeding in accordance with the procedures in the appropriate Subaru Service Manual.

5. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper function of braking system.

CLAIMS REIMBURSEMENT AND ENTRY PROCEDURES

Credit to perform this Service Program will be based on the submission of properly completed repair order information. Dealers may enter the applicable claim information through their Dealer Communications System (DCS).

Listed below is claim entry information:





Inspection Only - Use the following claim submission information for verification of the VIN number only. If the Master Cylinder is not within the affected VIN numbers, or the Bore Size is correct no further action is required. A total of .2 labor hours will be credited upon claim submission.





Inspection and Replacement of the Master Cylinder Assembly - Use the following claim submission information if the Master Cylinder is found within the affected VIN numbers and requires replacement. Enter labor operation 253-321 for 0.8 labor hours and the applicable part number(s). Parts will be reimbursed at dealers cost plus applicable handling allowance.

Note:
A total of 1.0 labor hours will be credited. This includes 0.2 labor hours automatically added to the claim for the initial inspection.





SERVICE PROGRAM IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle corrected in accordance with the instructions outlined in this bulletin will require a "campaign" completion label. Each label provides a space to include the dealer code of the dealer performing the service program. The information may be inserted on the completion label with a typewriter or permanent ink pen. After completing the information on the label, attach the label on the upper radiator cowl.

A quantity of 5 labels is being provided to each dealer with this bulletin. Additional quantities of labels are available through your area/distributor service office.
