Noise from Combination Meter

INTRODUCTION

This service bulletin informs of a countermeasure for eliminating a rattle type noise from around the combination meter. Residual flashing (burr) on the combination meter visor can rub against the combination meter glass causing a rattle type noise. To remove the burr, follow the repair procedure.

PRODUCTION LINE CHANGE

A process to eliminate the excessive flashing to the combination meter visor started in November 2004 with VIN 5*739076.

A second countermeasure of adding the non-woven material to the combination meter visor started in July 2005 with VIN 6*721487.





PARTS INFORMATION

REPAIR PROCEDURES/INFORMATION

Caution:
Be extremely careful not to damage and/or scratch the instrument panel, combination meter, combination meter glass, steering wheel, column cover, etc. when performing the procedure.





1) Use a suitable cloth to cover the upper steering column cover to prevent scratches (see Figure 1). To ease removal, lower the steering column to the lowest position.





2) There are 2 screws and 2 clips that secure the combination meter visor (see Figure 2).

Remove the 2 screws. To remove the visor, gently lift up on the bottom of the visor and pull to the left or right to disengage the clips.





3) Backside of combination meter visor which identifies location of excessive flashing (see Figure 3).

Caution:
Whenever using a single edge razor blade extreme caution must be used.





4) Use a single edge razor blade to remove the flashing (see Figure 4).





5) Install a piece of non-woven material (10 mm wide x 20 mm long) to the combination meter bezel where indicated. Install a second piece with the same dimensions directly on top of the first piece to insure proper insulation.

Note:
The color of the non-woven material was changed to white for illustration purposes.

6) Reinstall combination meter visor in reverse order of removal.

7) Road test vehicle to confirm noise is gone.

Parts:

Use part # SOA635079 for the non-woven material. The part # is non-orderable and used for claim purposes only.

MUD GUARDS DESCRIPTION

Front and rear mud guards are standard equipment on all models. mud guards will help prevent an excessive build-up of mud on the body.
