Engine - Stopper Rods Appear Rusty

Stopper Rod(s) Appearance
Introduction
In the event you encounter a customer complaint that the stopper rods have a rusty appearance, the listed repair procedure should be performed in lieu of replacing the rods. The rust on the surface does not influence the fundamental performance of the stopper rods.
Countermeasure in Production
The surface finishing of the stopper rods was changed in production starting with the VINs shown.
Material Needed
^ Wire brush
^ Sand paper
^ Can of Rust-Oleum(R) High Heat Black Ultra Spray Paint, available at local hardware stores.
Note:
One can is sufficient for 6 repairs.
Repair Procedure/Information
1) Remove the air intake duct.
2) Remove the stopper rods.
Note:
Safety glasses and a respiratory mask should be worn.
3) Use a wire brush and/or sand paper to remove any surface rust. A Surface Preparation Guide and the MSDS is available on the Rust-Oleum(R) web-site at www.rustoleum.com
Make sure the surface is free from sanding dust, dirt, oil and grease. A tack rag or cleaning solvent may be used.
Note:
Read and follow the cautions and instructions on the can before painting.
4) Paint the stopper rods; a second coat may be required. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.
5) Install stopper rods. Tightening torque 36 Nm (3.7 kgf-m, 26.6 ft-lb)
6) Install the air intake duct.

For vehicles within the Basic New Car Limited Warranty period, this repair may be claimed using the table shown.
Note:
Up to $2.00 may be charged out in sublet to cover the cost of the paint and materials.
