SX-4Technical Bulletin
Division: Automotive
Section Title: Transmission
Category: Technical
TSB No. TS 08 06290
Technical Service Department
SUBJECT:
EMISSION RECALL CAMPAIGN: SF, MIL ON DUE TO DTC P0721.
MODEL(S):
SX-4 (RW420)
YEAR:
2010
VIN BREAKS:
JS2Y_5A4_A6300002 ~ JS2Y_5A3_A6310490
PLEASE REFER TO THE VIN LIST TO FIND ANY VEHICLES
THAT WERE REPORTED IN YOUR DEALER INVENTORY AS OF THE
LAUNCH DATE OF THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN.
CONDITION:
During operation of the vehicle a condition may arise where an Emission DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) P0721 is set, causing the MIL (Malfunction
Indicator Light or Check Engine Light) to light, and go into a "fail safe" mode, and could result in the vehicle losing power/acceleration.
CAUSE:
A stepper motor in the CVT assembly (Transaxle) may not operate smoothly
when commanded. As a result the TCM may detect an abnormality in the CVT
pulley ratio, setting DTC P0721.
CORRECTION:
The TCM will be reprogrammed with new calibration program data allowing the CVT to operate as designed.
WARRANTY INFORMATION:
NOTE:
For information concerning how to download and install the Reprogramming software, or to purchase any of the tools and/or accessories required, go to the website via your Suzuki Connect portal.
REFLASH PROCESS
1. Connect the SDT (Suzuki Diagnostic Tool) to the vehicle, then without pressing the brake pedal, switch the vehicle to a "key on, engine off" condition.
NOTE:
The "Key on" state of the vehicle must be obtained during several of the steps in the reprogramming procedure, and can only be identified by observing the array of warning lights illuminated in the instrument cluster area above the information center in the dash. To avoid critical errors during the reflash process, please confirm these conditions prior to advancing through the program screens on the PC.
2. Select the "Auto Detect" function from the start screen, then push the "Utility" button and check all DTC's in the system. Record any DTC(s) stored by the SDT, however the codes listed normally do not represent a malfunction or vehicle concern. Clear all DTC's, and if any of the DTC's not on the list re-appear, refer to the applicable Suzuki Service Manual and follow the diagnostic procedure(s), and contact the S.M.A.R.T. Hotline for further assistance.
3. Using the USB cable that came with the SDT, connect the scan tool to the USB port of the PC/Laptop being used for SEPS (Suzuki ECU Programming System) reflashing. The USB connector for the SDT is found on the upper right side of the tool, under a double cap with the RS232 connector (not used). The found new hardware wizard will likely run once the tool is
recognized by windows software, if so simply follow the prompts provided by the wizard.
4. From your windows desktop on your PC press the "start" button at the lower right corner of the screen, choose "All Programs". If you have not yet downloaded the latest SEPS Database software version 2.010.0601 or later from Suzuki Pitstop Plus, please do so at this time (this
download only needs to be performed once per computer, unless the program is deleted or the annual serial number expires).
5. Choose the "Suzuki ECU Programming System" program directory, then select "Suzuki Pass-Thru Programming Software"
6. The initial SEPS screen automatically populates with the Dealer Code (Distributor Code) that was entered during installation and the current date. If for any reason the Dealer Code is not correct it can be updated at this point. If the date is incorrect, you must check and adjust the
Date/Time in the system setting of your computer. After confirming the information is correct, click the "Next" button in the lower right corner of the program window.
7. Select TCM as the target ECU, then click "Next".
8. Select the "Suzuki SDT DENSO CORPORATION" as the pass-thru device, then click "Next".
9. Confirm the connections of the SDT and all cables, from an "Off" condition, turn the ignition switch on. Verify the ignition is in the on mode by checking that the warning lamps in the instrument panel are lighted. Click the "Next" button.
You should now be looking at the following screen indicating that communication between the PC and the TCM is being initialized.
10. Once communication is established, a screen is displayed confirming that the TCM is suitable for reflash. The VIN will not populate nor allow an entry to be made, click the "Next" button.
11. Next a summary of the programming information is displayed. Review the info to ensure that there is nothing that appears to be in error and click the "Next" button.
12. The PC will now begin the transfer of the calibration data files. This operation will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
13. Once the data transfer is complete the program requires that the ignition be turned off for a minimum time period of one minute. Once the vehicle is turned off, click the "Next" button.
14. The program must now countdown the 60 seconds with the key off.
15. One minute later you will be instructed to turn the ignition back to the "ON" position. Be sure to confirm that the ignition is in fact on, then click the "Next" button.
16. The final screen is now displayed indicating that the programming was successful, and also the summary of the new TCM parameters. Click "Finish"
17. Using the SDT scan tool, once again check for DTC's that may have triggered during the reflash process. Compare the findings with the codes you recorded in Step 2 before starting the process, and to the chart of "expected" DTC's. Diagnose all codes not related to the programming and not in the chart.
18. Apply the proper campaign label to the upper radiator support in an area where it will be easily seen and identified, and record your Dealer Code in the white portion of the label.
