Maintenance: Service and Repair

Final Inspection for Maintenance Service

WARNING:

If you do not select a suitable route and take proper precautions when performing a road test, an accident can occur.

Select a level road with no traffic to minimize the risk of an accident, and perform the test extremely carefully.

Seats

Check that each front seat slides smoothly and locks securely at any position. Also check that reclining mechanism of each front seat allows the seatback to be locked at any angle.

Seat Belts

Inspect seat belt systems including webbing, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchors for damage or wear.

Check that each seat belt locks securely. If "REPLACE BELT" label on seat belt is visible, replace belt.

Battery Electrolyte Level Check

Check that the electrolyte level of every battery cell is between the upper and lower level lines on the case. If battery is equipped with built-in indicator, check battery condition by the indicator.

Accelerator Pedal Operation

Check that accelerator pedal operates smoothly without getting caught by or interfering any other part.

Engine Start

Check the engine starts readily.

WARNING:

If you do not take proper precautions when performing the engine start check as described below, the vehicle could move without warning causing personal injury and/or property damage.

When checking the ignition system as described below, be sure to take the following precautions:

- Provide adequate space around the vehicle.
- Firmly apply both the parking brake and the service brake.
- Do not use the accelerator pedal.
- Change ignition mode of keyless push start system to LOCK (OFF) immediately if the engine starts.

On CVT vehicles, try to start the engine in each select lever position. The starting motor should crank only in "P" (Park) or "N" (Neutral) range.

On manual transaxle vehicles, place the gearshift lever in "Neutral," depress clutch pedal halfway and try to start.

Starting motor should crank only when clutch is fully depressed.

Exhaust System Check

Check for leakage, cracks or loose supports.

Clutch (Manual Transaxle Model)

Check for the following:

- Clutch is completely released when clutch pedal is depressed.
- No slipping clutch occurs when releasing pedal and accelerating.
- Clutch itself is free from any abnormal conditions.

Gearshift or Select Lever

Check gear shift or select lever for smooth movement to all positions and for good and correct response of transaxle in any position.

With CVT equipped vehicles, also check that shift indicator indicates position correctly according to select lever position.

With CVT equipped vehicles, also check that vehicle is at complete stop when select lever is placed in "P" range and all brakes are released.

Brakes

Foot brakes

Check the following:

- Brake pedal has proper travel.
- Brakes work properly.
- Brakes do not generate abnormal noise.
- Vehicle does not pull to one side when brakes are applied.
- Brakes do not drag.

Parking brake

Check that lever stroke is proper.

WARNING:

If you do not take proper precautions when testing the parking brake on a slope, the vehicle could move unexpectedly, causing personal injury and/or property damage.

When testing the parking brake on a slope, be sure to take the following precautions:

- Make sure there is nothing in the way in the downhill direction.
- Apply the service brake quickly if the vehicle moves.

Check that parking brake is fully effective when the vehicle is stopped on a slope by pulling parking brake lever all the way.

Steering

- Check that steering wheel is not instable and has no abnormally large resistance to turn.
- Check that vehicle does not wander or pull to one side.

Engine

- Check that speed changes responsively to accelerator positions.
- Check that engine is free from abnormal noise and abnormal vibration.

Body, Wheels and Power Train Components

Check that body, wheels and power train components are free from any abnormal conditions such as abnormal noise and vibration.

Meters and Gauges

Check that speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, etc. are operating accurately.

Lights

Check that all lights operate properly.

Windshield Defroster

Periodically check that air comes out from defroster outlet when operating heater or air conditioning.

Set mode control lever to defroster position and fan switch lever to highest position for this check.
