Rear Drive Shaft Assembly Removal and Installation

Rear Drive Shaft Assembly On-Vehicle Inspection:Rear

Removal

1) Hoist vehicle and remove rear wheel.
2) Release caulking from drive shaft nut (1) and remove drive shaft nut with brake pedal depressed.





3) Remove exhaust pipe No.2. Exhaust Pipe and Muffler Removal and Installation
4) Drain rear differential oil. Removal and Replacement
5) Remove rear brake caliper. Rear Brake Caliper Removal and Installation
6) Disconnect rear wheel speed sensor from suspension knuckle. Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Removal and Installation
7) Remove rear wheel hub assembly. Rear Wheel Hub and Suspension Knuckle Removal and Installation (4WD Model)
8) Use tire lever (1) to pull out drive shaft joint (2).

NOTE:
Turning drive shaft may facilitate to release snap ring fitting of joint spline, while pulling out drive shaft.









Installation

NOTE:

Failure to take proper precautions when installing the drive shaft may result in damage to or breakage of the drive shaft assembly.

- Be careful not to damage the oil seals and boots when installing the drive shaft.
- Insert joints only by hand. Never hit joint boots with a hammer.
- Make sure that the differential-side joint is fully inserted and the snap ring is seated in position.

Reverse removal procedure, noting the following points.

- Use new differential side joint circlip.
- Tighten rear wheel speed sensor bolt to specified torque. Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Removal and Installation
- Tighten brake caliper bolts to specified torque. Rear Brake Caliper Removal and Installation
- Tighten new drive shaft nut to specified torque, loosen it one rotation or more, and then retighten it to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Drive shaft nut* (a): 250 Nm (25.5 kgf-m, 184.5 lbf-ft)

- Caulk drive shaft nut (1) as shown.











- Fill rear differential oil. Removal and Replacement
- Tighten exhaust pipe No.2 nuts to specified torque. Exhaust Pipe and Muffler Removal and Installation
- Install rear wheel. Removal and Replacement
