Cooling System: Testing and Inspection
Fig. 1 Checking Cooling Fan Motor Relay:
a. Using a suitable ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals 1 and 2, Fig. 1. Continuity should exist.
b. Check for continuity between terminals 3 and 4. Continuity should exist.
c. If continuity checks are not as specified, replace relay.
3. Check ignition switch relay continuity as follows:
Fig. 6 Checking ignition switch relay. Starlet, Tercel Wagon & 1984-86 Tercel Sedan:
a. Using a suitable ohmmeter, check that continuity exists between terminals 1 and 2, Fig. 6.
b. Using a suitable ohmmeter, check that no continuity exists between terminals 3 and 4.
c. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
d. Apply battery voltage across terminals 1 and 2, then check for no continuity between terminals 3 and 4.
e. If continuity exists, replace relay.
Fig. 2 Checking fan motor:
3. Connect a suitable ammeter and battery to fan motor connector, Fig. 2. Ensure motor rotates smoothly and current is 4.2-5.4 amps on sedan models with manual transaxle, 5.8-7.4 amps on sedan models with automatic transaxle and 4WD models with manual transaxle or 8.8-10.8 amps on 2WD wagon models with automatic transaxle.
