Cylinder Head Installation

1. Install distributor drive gear, washer and attaching bolt on camshaft. Do not tighten bolt at this time.
2. Lubricate camshaft bearing journals with engine oil, then position camshaft in cylinder head.
3. Place camshaft bearing caps Nos. 2, 3 and 4 in position with stamped arrows facing camshaft gear end of head.
4. Apply multipurpose grease to camshaft oil seal inner diameter, then apply suitable liquid sealer to seal outer diameter and install seal.
5. Apply small amount of suitable sealer to corners where oil seal outer diameter intersects valve cover mounting flange.
6. Place camshaft bearing cap No. 1 in position with stamped arrows facing camshaft gear end of cylinder head.

7. Install bearing cap bolts, then tighten bolts in increments to a final torque of 9 ft. lbs. following sequence shown in Fig. 5.

Fig. 3 Measuring camshaft thrust clearance on overhead cam engine. Typical:

8. Position suitable dial indicator as shown in Fig. 3, then measure camshaft thrust clearance by prying camshaft back and forth. Standard clearance is .0031-.0071 inch. If clearance exceeds .0098 inch, cylinder head should be replaced.
9. While holding camshaft steady with wrench positioned at flats, torque distributor drive gear attaching bolt to 22 ft. lbs.
10. Install camshaft drive gear on camshaft, then while holding camshaft steady with wrench positioned at flats, torque drive gear attaching bolts to 34 ft. lbs. Keep camshaft drive gear free of any oil or water.

11. Loosen rocker arm adjusting screw locknuts, then install rocker arms and attaching bolts. Tighten bolts in increments to a final torque of 18 ft. lbs. following sequence shown in Fig. 6.
12. Install intake and exhaust manifolds, then the fuel pump and carburetor.
13. Install new cylinder head gasket with sealer side facing up, then the cylinder head and cylinder head attaching bolts.

Fig. 7 Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence.:

14. Tighten bolts in increments to a final torque of 43 ft. lbs. following sequence shown in Fig. 7.
15. Install bolt from exhaust manifold-to-engine bracket.
16. If equipped, install AS system components.
17. Install timing belt. Refer to ``Timing Belt, Replace'' for procedure.
18. Adjust valves. Refer to ``Valves, Adjust'' for procedure.
19. While rotating crankshaft in a clockwise direction, bring cylinder No. 1 to TDC compression. No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression when No. 1 cylinder rocker arms have freeplay. If rocker arms do not have freeplay, rotate crankshaft an additional turn and check again.
20. Align distributor lower housing mark with distributor drive gear roll pin, then install distributor and hold-down bolt(s).
21. Install spark plugs, then connect distributor secondary cables.
22. Install timing belt upper cover with gasket.
23. Install water pump pulley and drive belts.
24. Refill crankcase by pouring proper quantity of engine oil over rocker arms and distributor drive gear.
25. Install valve cover half-circle plug, then apply small amount of suitable sealer to corners where No. 1 camshaft bearing cap and half-circle plug intersects valve cover mounting flange.
26. Install valve cover gasket and valve cover, then connect PCV system.
27. Connect exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold.
28. Connect oxygen sensor, radiator upper hose, accelerator cable and throttle valve cable (if equipped).
29. Connect hoses, wires and cables that were disconnected during removal procedure.
30. Refill cooling system, then install air cleaner.
31. Connect battery ground cable, then start engine and allow to reach operating temperature while checking for leaks.
32. Torque cylinder head bolts and readjust valve clearances.
33. Adjust ignition timing and idle speed as necessary.
