Models Equipped With Automatic Transaxle


1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly, grille and engine compartment hood.
3. Cover drive shaft boots with shop towels to prevent damage when engine is removed.
4. Remove radiator, then disconnect carburetor electrical connector.
5. Disconnect hose from emission canister and fuel hose from pump.
6. Disconnect power brake vacuum booster hose from engine.
7. Disconnect engine ground straps, accelerator cable and heater hose from engine.
8. Disconnect high tension lead from coil and neutral start switch and alternator electrical connectors.
9. Remove starter motor.
10. Disconnect throttle linkage, exhaust pipe and oil cooler line from engine.
11. Remove stiffener plate bolts and exhaust pipe bracket bolts from engine.
12. Disconnect oil cooler line from transaxle.
13. Raise and support vehicle, then remove bolts securing engine mounting and engine shock absorber to engine. Remove bolts securing stiffener plate, then remove torque converter cover.
14. Support transmission with suitable jack, then remove lower transaxle mounting bolts.
15. Remove remaining transaxle bolts, then remove four torque converter bolts.
16. Attach suitable hoist to engine and position engine forward two inches.
17. Using suitable pry bar, pry engine from torque converter, then remove engine from vehicle.
18. Support converter housing after engine is removed to prevent damage to transaxle.
19. Check that torque converter is properly positioned in housing by placing straightedge across housing flange. Converter should be recessed 1.02 inch (26 mm) from housing flange.
20. Install 1.18 inch (30 mm) guide bolt onto any torque converter mounting hole.
21. Remove left side engine mount insulator and right side engine mount bracket from engine prior to installation.
22. Align drive plate hole with torque converter drive bolt, then align crankshaft hole with converter hub and install engine to transaxle.
23. Temporarily install two upper transaxle mounting bolts, then remove guide bolts. Remove guide bolts and temporarily install torque converter using four .59 inch (15 mm) long bolts, tightening each bolt alternately.
24. Remove temporarily installed bolts and install regular bolts.
25. Install engine mountings, then install transaxle to engine mounting bolts. Reverse steps 1 through 13 to complete installation. Torque transaxle mounting bolts to 37-57 ft. lbs.
