Ignition Timing: Adjustments
1. Connect a timing light to engine and disconnect the two vacuum hoses to the distributor (3A-C only).
2. Start the engine and let it idle. Idle should be no more than 900 rpm for the 3A and 950 rpm for the 3A-C, adjust as necessary.
3. On both engines, slowly turn the distributor until the timing mark indicates 5° BTDC.
4. Tighten the lockdown bolt and ensure that timing is still within spec.
Torque to 13 Nm (9 ft.lbs).
5. On the 3A-C engine only, you can further check ignition timing as follows.
6. Reconnect the two vacuum hoses to the distributor and check that timing advances to 13° BTDC on Fed. and Canadian spec cars and to 9° BTDC on California spec vehicles.
