4 Wheel Drive Tercel


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then disconnect transaxle electrical connectors.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly, then the transaxle upper support mounting bolts.
3. Remove driveshafts, then raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove converter air inlet pipes, then the front exhaust pipe.
5. Disconnect oil cooler inlet and outlet pipes, then the throttle linkage.
6. Disconnect shift control rod, then disconnect speedometer cable.
7. Disconnect fluid temperature warning switch connector, then remove right stiffener plate.
8. Remove torque converter cover attaching bolts, dust cover, then the converter cover.
9. Remove torque converter mounting bolts by rotating converter to gain access to each.
10. Remove lower mount bolts, then place a wooden block between engine and dash panel.
11. Support transaxle, using a suitable jack, then remove rear support member.
12. Lower transaxle downward and toward the rear to remove from vehicle.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque starter and transaxle lower mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. for 10 mm bolts or 43 ft. lbs. for 12 mm bolts.
b. Torque rear support member bolts to 70 ft. lbs.
c. Torque torque converter mount bolts to 13 ft. lbs. and torque converter cover bolts to 17 ft. lbs. for 14 mm bolts or 48 inch lbs. for 17 mm bolts.
d. Torque front exhaust pipe mount bolts to 46 ft. lbs. and transaxle upper mount bolts to 29 ft. lbs. for 14 mm bolts or 43 ft. lbs. for 17 mm bolts.
e. Torque transaxle drain plug to 22 ft. lbs. and the filler plug to 30 ft. lbs.
