TITLE FORMED IN PLACE GASKET MATERIAL

Toyota has begun using a silicone Formed In Place Gasket material (FIPG) for engine assembly in some areas which previously required the use of a separate gasket. The current FIPG application is:

April 1982 - Tercel oil pan
1983 - Tercel and Corolla oil pans
1983-1/2 - Camry oil pan and camshaft housing

To insure complete sealing performance it is important that the Toyota recommended FIPG (part number 08826-00080) or an equivalent be used. An equivalent material must possess the following characteristics:

^ Resistant to oil and fuel
^ Non-corrosive

^ Temperature stability -76~F to 482~F (-60~c to 250~c)
^ Quick set-up time
^ Meets O.E.M. specifications for use on oxygen-sensor equipped engines

The use of the FIPG will also require some new cleaning and reassembly procedures.

Cleaning Gasket Surfaces:

^ Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old FIPG material from the gasket surfaces and sealing groove.
^ Thoroughly clean all components to remove all the loose material.
^ Clean both sealing surfaces with a nonresidue solvent.

CAUTION: Do not use a solvent which will affect the painted surfaces.
Application:

^ Cut the FIPG tube nozzle tip to the correct size:

Oil pan - 5 mm opening Camshaft housing - 2 mm opening

^ Apply a uniform, thin bead as shown in the repair manual.

NOTE: Avoid applying an excess amount to the surface. Be especially careful near oil passages.

^ Parts must be assembled within 15 minutes of application. Otherwise, the material must be removed and reapplied.

^ Immediately remove nozzle from tube and reinstall cap.
