Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove engine hood.
2. Drain engine oil and engine coolant.
3. Remove battery and battery carrier, then the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove radiator assembly.
5. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C condenser fan, then the A/C compressor. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines.
6. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump. Do not disconnect power steering pump hoses.
7. On all models, disconnect and mark all electrical connectors from engine.
8. Disconnect accelerator cable.
9. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect throttle linkage.
10. On all models, disconnect the following hoses:
a. Heater inlet and outlet hoses.
b. Fuel pump inlet and return hoses.
c. Brake booster hose from intake manifold.
d. VSV vacuum hose.
e. Emission control hoses. Before removing emission control hoses, note location to ensure correct installation.
11. Disconnect air suction filter from cylinder block, if equipped.
12. Remove transaxle upper mount attaching bolts.
13. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front exhaust pipe.
14. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove oil cooler pipes.
15. On models equipped with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch release cable.
16. On all models, remove stiffener plates.
17. Disconnect engine mounting absorber from crossmember, then remove two engine mount attaching bolts.
18. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove torque converter cover, then the torque converter attaching bolts.
19. On all models, cover driveshaft boots with shop towel to prevent damage and dirt entry when engine is removed.
20. Support transaxle with a suitable jack, then remove transaxle lower mount attaching bolts.
21. Attach suitable engine hoist to engine lift brackets, then remove engine from vehicle.
22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque transaxle mount attaching bolts to 29 ft. lbs. for 14 mm bolts and 43 ft. lbs. for 17 mm bolts.
b. Torque stiffener plate attaching bolts to 29 ft. lbs.
c. Torque automatic transaxle cooler pipes to 25 ft. lbs.
d. Torque engine mount nuts to 33 ft. lbs.
