Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING then remove engine compartment hood.2. Remove engine undercover, then drain coolant from radiator and engine block into suitable container.
3. Drain engine oil into suitable container.
4. On models less turbo, disconnect air flow meter wire connector and power steering air hose, then remove air cleaner case attaching bolts. Remove air cleaner case with hoses.
5. On models with turbo, remove air cleaner pipe and hose, then disconnect three air hoses and PCV hose. Disconnect air flow meter wire connector and power steering air hose, then remove air cleaner hose, air flow meter and air cleaner cap.
6. On all models, remove radiator as follows:
a. Disconnect condenser fan motor connector.
b. Disconnect radiator hoses and coolant reservoir tank hose.
c. On models equipped with auto. trans., disconnect cooler hoses from radiator.
d. On all models, remove radiator supports, then the radiator.
7. Remove A/C belt, alternator drive belt, water pump pulley and fan clutch.
8. Remove power steering belt, then disconnect brake booster hose, heater valve hose, cruise control hose and charcoal canister hose.
9. Disconnect the following:
a. Ground strap from left front fender apron.
b. Battery ground cable.
c. Noise filter connector.
d. Theft deterrent horn connector.
e. Check connector.
f. Solenoid resistor connector.
g. On models less turbo, ignition coil connector.
h. On turbo models, igniter connectors.
i. On all models, main relay connector and alternator connector.
j. On models less turbo, oxygen sensor connector.
k. On all models, heater valve connector.
l. Engine rear side ground connection.
m. Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) connectors.
10. Disconnect cruise control cable and accelerator cable.
11. On models equipped with auto. trans, transmission throttle valve cable.
12. On all models, disconnect heater hoses, then remove A/C compressor.
13. On turbo models, remove air cleaner hose and radiator outlet hose.
14. Disconnect power steering hoses, then remove power steering pump.
15. On models equipped with man. trans., remove shift lever.
16. Disconnect ground strap from fuel hose clamp.
17. On turbo models, remove engine mounting shock absorber.
18. On all models, disconnect fuel hoses, then remove exhaust pipe.
19. Remove driveshaft, then disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
20. On models equipped with auto. trans., remove manual shift linkage.
21. On all models, remove No. 1 front crossmember.
22. On models equipped with man. trans., remove clutch slave cylinder without disconnecting hydraulic hose and position aside.
23. On all models, position suitable jack under transmission oil pan. Place a piece of wood between jack and pan to prevent damage to transmission.
24. Place suitable piece of wood between firewall and cylinder head to prevent damaging heater hose.
25. Remove rear engine mount support member and ground strap from body.
26. Attach suitable lifting device to engine/transmission assembly, then remove engine mounting nuts and washers.
27. Carefully lift engine/transmission assembly from vehicle, then place on suitable stand.
28. On models equipped with auto. trans., remove transmission oil cooler tubes.
29. On all models, remove transmission assembly.
30. Reverse procedure to install.
