Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove battery and coolant reserve tank.2. Scribe reference marks in engine hood hinge area, then remove hood.
3. Remove engine undercovers.
4. Drain coolant, then drain radiator into suitable container.
5. On 1989-90 models, remove windshield washer reservoir tank.
6. On models equipped with cruise control, disconnect control cable and connector, then remove actuator attaching bolts and the actuator.
7. On all models, disconnect accelerator cable.
8. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission throttle cable.
9. On 1991-92 models, remove PCV hoses, then remove air cleaner assembly with air intake.
10. On all models, disconnect fuel hoses from fuel pump and plug open ends.
11. Remove charcoal canister.
12. Disconnect brake booster hose.
13. On 1991-92 models, disconnect vacuum sensor hose, A/C idle up hose, idle up vacuum transmitting hose and power steering idle up hose.
14. On all models, disconnect heater hoses.
15. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
16. Disconnect transmission control cables from transaxle.
17. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove control cable bracket.
18. On all models, remove clutch slave cylinder from transaxle and position aside. Do not disconnect hydraulic lines.
19. On 1991-92 models, remove starter.
20. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove gear selector bell crank.
21. On 1989-90 models, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect ground strap from left front fender apron.
b. Disconnect oxygen sensor wire.
c. Disconnect water temperature sensor gauge wire.
d. Disconnect cold Mixture Heater (CMH) water temperature switch wire.
e. On models equipped with manual transmission, disconnect back-up light switch wire.
f. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect neutral safety switch wire.
g. On all models, disconnect Integrated Ignition Assembly (IIA) wire.
h. Disconnect cooling fan water temperature switch wire.
i. Disconnect wiring harness from intake manifold.
j. Remove intake manifold-to-engine block brace attaching bolt and nut, then the ground strap and bracket.
k. Disconnect solenoid and Cold Mixture Heater (CMH) electrical connectors.
l. Disconnect alternator and starter electrical connectors.
m. Remove Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV).
22. On 1991-92 models, disconnect the following electrical connectors:
a. Oxygen sensor.
b. Oil pressure switch.
c. Water temperature sender gauge.
d. Water temperature sensor.
e. On models equipped with manual transmission. back-up light switch.
f. On models equipped with manual transmission, neutral start switch.
g. On all models, distributor connectors.
h. Water temperature switch.
i. On California models, throttle opener VSV.
j. On models equipped with A/C, A/C idle up VSV.
k. On all models, wiper motor.
l. Vacuum sensor.
m. Igniter connector.
n. Four injector connectors.
o. Throttle position sensor.
p. Cylinder head ground strap.
q. Starter and alternator connectors.
23. On models equipped with power steering, remove pump from engine with hoses attached and position aside.
24. On models equipped with A/C, remove compressor with hoses attached and position aside.
25. On all models, disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
26. Disconnect driveshafts from transaxle.
27. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment, then remove rear mount through bolt and insulator.
28. Remove front mount through bolt, then the front mount from the cylinder block.
29. Remove right side mount through bolt and insulator.
30. On 1991-92 models, disconnect ground strap.
31. On all models, remove left side mount attaching bolts, then the mount.
32. Carefully lift engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle and place on suitable stand.
33. Remove starter from engine.
34. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove flywheel inspection cover, then rotate crankshaft as necessary to loosen six torque converter attaching bolts.
35. On all models, remove transaxle from engine.
36. Reverse procedure to install.
