ADJUSTMENT METHOD OF BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT
Due to a change in the "ON and OFF" changeover point of the stop light switch, the method of adjusting the brake pedal height on Tercel has changed.
Take the following steps to ensure proper pedal height.
1. ADJUST PEDAL HEIGHT
Figure 1:
A) Disconnect the stop light switch connector.
B) Loosen the stop light switch lock nut and remove the stop light switch.
C) Loosen the booster push-rod lock nut.
D) Adjust the pedal height indicated in Figure 1 by turning the booster push rod.
PEDAL HEIGHT SPECIFICATION:
4 SPEED M/TM:
143.0-153.0 mm (5.63-6.03 in.)
5 SPEED M/TM and 3 speed A/TM
138.5-148.5 mm (5.45-5.85 in.)
E) Tighten the push rod lock nut.
Torque:
260 kg-cm (19 ft-lb, 25 N-m)
F) Install the stop light switch and turn it until it lightly touches the pedal stopper.
G) Turn the stop light switch counter clockwise one turn. Then check the clearance "A" indicated in Figure 2.
Clearance:
0.5-2.4 mm (0.02-0.09 in.)
H) Tighten the stop light switch lock nut and connect the connector.
I) Make sure the stop lights come on when the brake pedal is depressed and goes off when the pedal is released.
NOTE: If the stop light switch and the brake pedal stopper are adjusted correctly, the pedal free-play should be within specification.
2. CHECK PEDAL FREE-PLAY
A) With the engine not running depress the brake pedal several times until there is no more vacuum in the booster.
B) Gently push the brake pedal in by hand until resistance is felt. Then measure the distance as shown in Figure 3.
Pedal Free-play:
1-6 mm (0.04-0.24 in.)
C) Re-check the stop light clearance and readjust if necessary.
