Fuel Gauge: Testing and Inspection

1. Disconnect connector from sender gauge.
2. Turn ignition switch to On position, then check receiver gauge needle indicates Empty.
3. Connect terminals 2 and 3 on wire harness side connector through a 3.4W test bulb, Fig. 24.

4. Turn ignition switch On, then ensure bulb lights and receiver gauge needle moves toward full side.

5. On 1993 models, measure resistance between terminals A, B and C, Fig. 25. Resistance should be as follows:
a. A-B: about 261.5 ohms.
b. A-C: about 107.2 ohms.
c. B-C: about 154.3 ohms.
6. On 1994-96 models, measure resistance between terminals A, B and C, Fig. 25. Resistance should be as follows:
a. A-B: about 269.7 ohms.
b. A-C: about 123.5 ohms.
c. B-C: about 146.2 ohms.
7. If resistance is not as specified, replace receiver gauge.
8. On 1993 models, connect a series of three 1.5 volt dry cell batteries, then connect the positive lead from the dry cell batteries to terminal 3 through a 3.4W test bulb and the negative lead to terminal 1, Fig. 26.

9. On 1994-96 models, connect a series of three 1.5 volt dry cell batteries, then connect the positive lead from the dry cell batteries to terminal 2 through a 3.4W test bulb and the negative lead to terminal 3, Fig. 26.
10. On 1993 models, ensure voltage rises between terminals 1 and 3 as the float is moved from top to bottom position.
11. GOn 1994-96 models, ensure voltage rises between terminals 2 and 3 as the float is moved from top to bottom position.
12. On 1993 models, measure resistance between terminals 2 and 3 for each float position, Fig. 26. Resistance should be as follows:
a. Full position: about 3.0 ohms.
b. 1/2 position: about 31.5 ohms.
c. Empty position: about 110.0 ohms.
13. On 1994-96 models, measure resistance between terminals 2 and 3 for each float position, Fig. 26. Resistance should be as follows:
a. Full position: about 4.0 ohms.
b. 1/2 position: about 55.0 ohms.
c. Empty position: about 107.0 ohms.
14. On all models, if resistance is not as specified, replace sender gauge.
