WATER-BORNE PAINT COLOR INTRODUCTION

Toyota began using water-borne paint in the U.S. with the introduction of the U.S. built 1995 Avalon and selected U.S. built 1995 Camrys.

NOTE:
Only Camrys built on the No. 2 assembly line at the Georgetown (U.S.) assembly plant use the new water-borne paint system.

The base color coat used on the 2-stage (color coat/clear coat system) is water-borne.
The mica (pearl) coat used on the 3-stage (color coat/mica coat/clear coat system) is water-borne.

Conventional solvent based material is used in the clear coat for both the 2 and 3-stage paints as well as the base coat of the 3-stage paint system.

Water-borne paint contains the normal resins, solvents and pigments, however, the colored base material now contains more water than solvents hence the name water-borne.

Water-borne paint resins are essentially the same as the resins in solvent based paint. Therefore, once dried, both paint types have the same basic properties.

Drying characteristics of water-borne paint is similar to that of conventional solvent based paint. Once the moisture has evaporated (through a pre-drying process), a solvent based clear coat is applied over the base color and both are baked at the same time using a conventional oven drying process.

PAINT FILM STRUCTURE:





In a 2-stage paint system, the color is mixed with either metallic particles or mica (pearl) flakes and sprayed over the primer surfacer. A protective clearcoat is then sprayed over the metallic particle/flake coat.

In a 3-stage paint system, a solid base color is sprayed over the primer surface. A mica (pearl), mixed with clear, is then sprayed over the color coat. A protective clear coat is then sprayed over the mica coat.

REPAIR PROCEDURES:

Use a conventional 2 component urethane refinish system, carefully following the recommendations of the respective paint manufacturer.
