Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection
1. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE WITH ENGINE OFF- Check that the battery voltage is above 12 volts.
- Disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery.
CAUTION: Fuel will be released under pressure.
^ Put a suitable container or shop rag under the delivery pipe.
^ Loosen the union bolt slowly.
- Remove the union bolt and 2 gaskets, and disconnect the fuel inlet hose from the delivery pipe.
- Install the fuel inlet hose and pressure gauge (SST) to the delivery pipe with 3 new gaskets and union bolt (SST).
(SST 09268-45012 - Fuel Pressure Test Kit)
Torque: 29 Nm (300 kg.cm, 22 ft.lb)
- Wipe off any splattered gasoline.
- Using a jumper wire (or SST 09843-18020), connect terminals +B and FP of the DLC1.
- Reconnect the negative (-) terminal cable to the battery.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the fuel pressure.
Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)
- If pressure is high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
- If pressure is low, check these parts:
^ Fuel hoses and connections
^ Fuel pump
^ Fuel filter
^ Fuel pressure regulator
- Remove the jumper from the DLC1.
2. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE WITH ENGINE IDLING
- Start the engine.
- Disconnect the vacuum sensing hose from the fuel pressure regulator. and plug the hose end.
- Measure the fuel pressure at idle.
Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)
- Reconnect the vacuum sensing hose to the fuel pressure regulator.
- Measure the fuel pressure at idle.
Fuel pressure: 206 - 255 kPa (31 - 37 psi)
- If pressure is not as specified, check the vacuum sensing hose and fuel pressure regulator.
- Stop the engine.
3. CHECK RESIDUAL FUEL PRESSURE
- Check that the fuel pressure remains as specified for 5 minutes after the engine is stopped.
Fuel pressure: 147 kPa (21 psi) or more
If pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injector.
- After checking fuel pressure, disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery and carefully remove the fuel pressure test guage to prevent gasoline from spraying.
- Reconnect the fuel inlet hose to the delivery pipe with 2 new gaskets and the union bolt.
Torque: 29 Nm (300 kg.cm, 22 ft.lb)
- Reconnect the negative (-) terminal cable to the battery.
4. CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKAGE
- Check for fuel leaks after performing maintenance anywhere on the fuel system.
- Refer to "Checking For Fuel System Leaks" under System Diagnosis.
