Repair Procedure

NOTE:
Protect the finished surfaces of the vehicle when working on the convertible top.

1. Open the convertible top halfway.

2. Inspect the length of No. 3 bow cable.

a. Remove the No. 3 bow cable retaining screws from the control link and the No. 3 bow bracket, then remove the cable (one screw from inside and the other from the outside of the vehicle as shown in Figure 2).

b. With the cable pulled taut, measure the length of the No. 3 bow cable by measuring from center to center of the eyelets as shown in Figure 3.

Specification: 156-159 mm (6.14-6.25 in.)

^ If the cable is within specification, reinstall the cable.

^ If the cable is not within specification, replace the cable with Toyota part number 65929-0W010.

c. Repeat for the other side.

NOTE:
Apply thread locker compound (Locktite 277 [red] or equivalent) sparingly to the two cable attaching screws, then Install the cable. Tighten the screws, then back them off approximately 1/4 turn. This will allow the cable eyelets to rotate about the screw without binding. Make sure the thread locker compound has not seeped out onto the screw and eyelet, as this would cause the eyelet to bind.

3. Remove the damaged top cover only if it requires replacement. Put it aside because it may be necessary to transfer staple locations, cut-lines, etc. Refer to the appropriate Toyota Service Manual (Publication No. RM426U) for removal procedures.

4. Inspect both balance links for a dot of yellow paint located on the outboard side at the main pivot bracket, or for the ASC part number E3030/1-H (see Figure 4 for locations).

^ If they both have a yellow paint dot or they are marked with part number E3030/1-H, IMMEDIATELY CALL ASC Technical Service for further instructions at (800) 542-4906.

^ If they do not have a yellow paint dot, or the part numbers are not E3030/1-H, replace them with a new balance link kit.

5. Before installing the new balance links, ensure that the new bushings are installed as shown in Figure 4.

6. Install the balance links using the procedure outlined in the Toyota Service Manual.

7. Install the new top cover (if applicable) using the procedure outlined in the Toyota Service Manual.

8. Inspect the top stack down stop. This procedure requires two people.

a. Lower the convertible top.

NOTE:
The front rail and center rail stops must be in contact (Figure 5). If they do not contact, that may indicate that there is an obstruction, the down stop is adjusted too high, and/or there are damaged components. Correct the problem before proceeding.

b. With the help of an assistant, carefully position a straightedge across the top stack at the front rail. The straightedge must be on the highest part of the front rail as shown in Figure 6.

c. Measure straight down from the straightedge to the top inner edge of the quarter belt molding and record the figure (see Figure 7). Repeat for the other side.

^ Specification: 122-124 mm (4.8-4.88 in.)

^ If the dimension is within specification no further action is required.

^ If the dimension is not within specification, the down stop must be adjusted. Raise the top stack and adjust as necessary, and recheck height.

^ Down Stop Lock-Nut

Torque: 12-16 N.m (106-142 lb.in.)

9. Inspect the convertible top and window function.

^ Cycle the convertible top to verify operation and ensure dowel pin receiver alignment is correct. Refer to the appropriate Toyota Service Manual (Publication No. RM426U) if adjustments are necessary.

^ Cycle both door and quarter windows, with the convertible top in both the down and up positions, to verify the operation is correct.

NOTE:
Refer to the Toyota Celica base vehicle Service Manual for door windows adjustments, and to the Publication No. RM426U for quarter window adjustment.
