AIRBAG DEACTIVATION (SUPPLEMENT)
This Technical Service Bulletin provides you with the installation instructions for the Airbag Cut Off Switches, Off Indicator and Wiring Harnesses necessary for the Airbag Deactivation procedure adopted by Transport Canada. These instructions are applicable to 1999 and 2000 model year Solara. They include the installation procedure requirements for the following conditions :
1. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side and passenger side)
2. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side only)
3. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for passenger side only)
NOTE: Be sure to explain the method of operation of the airbag deactivation system and also provide your customer with a copy of the owner's manual supplement.

NOTE:
Airbag Cut Off Switches are ON / OFF Switches.

PREPARATION
CAUTION:
Work must be started more than 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source. If work is started within 90 seconds from disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the SRS may be deployed.)
HINT:
For details about removal of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.
1. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
Remove the front door scuff plate LH.
2. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM
Remove the clip and pull out the cowl side trim rearward to remove it.
3. REMOVE NO. 1 LOWER PANEL
(a) Remove the 2 screws and hood control lever, then disconnect the hood lock control cable.
(b) Remove the bolt, screw and No. 1 lower panel.
(c) Disconnect the connector.
4. REMOVE LOWER PANEL INSERT
Remove the 4 bolts and lower panel insert.
5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER
6. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
Remove the 2 screws and the cluster finish panel.
7. REMOVE COMBINATION METER
(a) Remove the 4 screws and combination meter.
(b) Disconnect the connectors.
8. REMOVE LOWER FINISH PANEL
Using a screwdriver, remove the lower finish panel.
HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
9. REMOVE UPPER CONSOLE PANEL
10. REMOVE CENTRE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the ash receptacle box.
(b) Remove the clip.
(c) Remove the centre cluster finish panel and disconnect the connectors.
NOTICE:
When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.
15. REMOVE NO. 2 LOWER PANEL
Remove the bolt, 4 screws and No. 2 lower panel.
PROCEDURE :
1. CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Set the paper pattern for cluster finish panel on the cluster finish panel.
(b) Cut the cutting area as shown in the illustration.
NOTICE :
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
(c) Paste the 2 felt pieces to the cluster finish panel as shown in the illustration.
Felt : 10 X 15 mm.
2. GLOVE COMPARTMENT
(a) Disassemble the glove compartment.
(b) Set the paper pattern on the lower panel.
(c) Bore the 4 holes at the marked positions.
(d) Cut the indicated area of glove compartment door in the illustration.
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
3. INSTRUMENT PANEL
(a) Set the paper pattern for instrument panel on the instrument panel as shown in the illustration.
(b) Bore a hole at the marked position.
Hole diameter : 6 mm
(c) Cut the area marked B indicated in the illustration.
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
4. AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR BRACKET
Using a paper pattern, bend the airbag off indicator bracket as shown in the illustration.
5. AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR
(a) Paste the sticker, "SWITCH IN GLOVE BOX", on the upper surface of the airbag off indicator, as shown in the illustration.
(b) Wrap vinyl sheet around the wire harness between the end of airbag off indicator and the end of corrugated tube.
(c) Paste the felt piece on the corner of the indicator as shown in the illustration.
ASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR BRACKET
Install the bracket to the instrument panel with a bolt and nut.
2. INSTALL AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH
Install the driver's side switch and passenger's side switch to the glove compartment.
HINT: Install the driver's side switch to the LH side and the other one to the RH side.
INSTALLATION
NOTICE:
- When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.
- After binding the wire harness with a band clamp, cut off the excess.
1. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR
(a) Pass the indicator wire harness through the instrument panel hole in the direction of the ignition switch as shown in the illustration.
(b) Pull out the indicator wire harness for sub harness at the side of "heater to resister duct No. 2" as shown in the illustration.
NOTICE:
Install the indicator to the bracket after the cluster finish panel is installed.
(c) Pass the indicator wire harness for switch through the centre cluster to the glove box area.
(d) Install the combination meter.
(1) Connect the connectors.
(2) Install the combination meter with 4 screws.
(e) Install the cluster finish panel.
(f) Install the airbag off indicator to the bracket.
2. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND GLOVE BOX AREA
(a) Pass the switch wire harness for driver's side airbag through the centre cluster to the steering column area.
(b) Connect the indicator wire harness and switch wire harness as shown in the illustration.
(c) Connect the front passenger's airbag connector and the passenger's side airbag manual on-off switch connector.
(d) Bind all wire harnesses and fix the wire harnesses with vinyl tape as shown in the illustration.
(e) Wrap the wire harness bound in step (b) with vinyl sheet, and fix the end of vinyl sheet with vinyl tape.
Vinyl Sheet : 150 mm X 200 mm
(f) Fix the wire harness to the lower panel with 2 band clamps as shown in the illustration.
(g) Install the glove compartment.
3. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND STEERING COLUMN
(a) Connect the switch wire harness and the driver side airbag.
(b) Fix the switch wire harness to existing wire harness with 2 band clamps.
c) Bundle the excess wire harness for driver side airbag, and bind it with 2 band clamps.
(d) Wrap the wire harness bundle in step (c) with 2
urethane sheets. Urethane Sheet : 80 mm X 130 mm.
(e) Fix the wire harness bundle in step (c) to the instrument panel reinforcement with a band clamp as shown in the illustration.
4. INSTALL SUB HARNESS
Connect the indicator wire harness and the sub wire harness.
(a) Connect the clock wire harness and the sub harness connector.
(b) Wrap the connectors with urethane sheet.
Urethane Sheet : 80 mm X 130 mm.
6. INSTALL ALL REMAINING PARTS.
CHECKING AFTER INSTALLATION
1. CHECK VISIBILITY OF INDICATOR LIGHT
Check if the indicator light is visible from the normal driving position by having the customer seated in the driver's seat. Also, the indicator light must be visible from the passenger's seat.
2. SRS DIAGNOSIS CHECK
About 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ACC or ON, check that the SRS warning light in combination meter goes off.
If the SRS warning light flashes, the connector could be disconnected or a wire in the wire harness could be broken or short circuited. If this happens, check the applicable circuit for the DTC reading. (Refer to Repair Manual).
3. CHECK OPERATION OF AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR AND AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH
(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON, and check that all the indicator lights (AIRBAG, OFF) are lit.
(b) Check that the OFF indicator light goes out after approx. 5 seconds.
NOTICE:
In case that the airbag cut-off switch is at OFF position, the OFF indicator light stays ON.
(c) Check the operation of the OFF indicator light.
(d) Check the dimming function at night under the condition that the ignition switch is at ACC or ON and the airbag off indicator is lit, turn the light control switch to TAIL position and check that the indicator light dims.
