Introduction

Some 2003 model year Camry vehicles equipped with the 1MZ-FE engine may exhibit a surging during light throttle input at speeds between 38 - 42 mph with lock-up (LU) "ON." The Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration has been revised to correct this condition.

Warranty Information

Applicable warranty*

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

^ Authorized Modifications Labels may be ordered in packages of 25 from the Materials Distribution Center (MDC) through TDN Dealer Support Materials System, or by calling the MDC at 1-800-622-2033.

^ Current part number listed for reference only. Current part number reflects new calibration software installed after ECM (PCM) is recalibrated with Toyota Diagnostic Tester.

Repair Procedure

Verify vehicle condition based on customer complaint. Once condition is confirmed, proceed to Step 1.

1. Check for Authorized Modification Label affixed to vehicle in location as shown in Figure 2. If there is no label, proceed to step 2.





2. Connect the Diagnostic Tester to the vehicle and select CURRENT ECU CAL from the ECU REPROGRAM MAIN MENU. Determine the vehicle's current ECU calibration. (See Figure 1.)

NOTE:
^ If Calibration ID matches "Previous Calibration ID" as shown, proceed with flash reprogramming.

^ If calibration ID matches "New Calibration ID" as shown, this vehicle has already been reprogrammed.

Flash Reprogram ECM

1. Follow the procedures outlined in TSB SS002-01 dated March 9, 2001, ECU Flash Reprogramming Process.

2. Select proper ECM (PCM) calibration file for the vehicle model and reprogram ECM (PCM).

3. After flash reprogramming ECM, enter the following information on the Authorized Modifications Label using a permanent marker.

A. ECU Part Number and new Calibration ID.

B. Your Dealer Code.

C. Reprogramming Date.

D. This TSB number.





4. Attach the Authorized Modifications Label to the underside of the engine hood as shown.
