Some 2004 model year Solara vehicles may experience rear suspension tick or thump/knock noises. Use the following instructions to repair either noise.

APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
- 2004
model year Solara vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

A. Thump/Knock Noise
1. Remove rear seat cushion assembly and rear seat back assembly according to the ETAS, 2004 model year Solara Repair Manual:
Section: Sea; Subsection: Rear Seat Assembly Overhaul

2. Confirm rear upper strut nut torque.
Torque: 49 N-m (500kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf)

B. Tick Noise
1. Remove the rear strut assemblies according to ETAS, 2004 model year Solara Repair Manual:
Section: Rear Suspension; Subsection: Rear Shock Absorber with Coil Spring; Replacement Follow Steps 1 through 17.







2. Inspect the body surface where the upper strut makes contact, for any weld burrs, weld splatter, and excess PVC.
3. Remove all weld burrs, weld splatter, and excess PVC from the body surface where the upper rear strut makes contact. When the surface has been cleaned, immediately apply epoxy primer to the surface to prevent corrosion. When the epoxy primer has dried, apply undercoating.
4. Reassemble the rear suspension and tighten all fasteners to the torque specifications according to ETAS, 2004 model year Solara Repair Manual:
Section: Rear Suspension; Subsection: Rear Shock Absorber with Coil Spring; Replacement Follow Steps 22 through 25.
