INTRODUCTION:
Some 2005 model year Avalon vehicles may experience a small/slow oil drip from the bank 1 VVTi oil supply line on the front of the engine. The oil pipe has been improved to prevent this condition.

APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
- 2005 model year Avalon vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Confirm that the source of the oil drip is from the oil pipe sub--assembly for bank 1 VVTi in the area indicated in the illustration below.






NOTE:
The oil drip is occurring under timing gear cover No. 2 where the rubber hose connects to the metal pipe, with some oil held in the insulating foam.


2. If the pipe/hose connection is NOT leaking, continue leak source identification using a leak identification marking dye.
3. If the oil pipe sub--assembly on bank 1 of the engine is leaking, replace the oil pipe.
A. Remove timing gear cover No. 2.






B. Remove oil pipe.
a. Remove the bolt (A).
b. Remove the 2 oil pipe unions and the oil pipe.
c. Remove the oil control valve filter and gaskets.

C. Install oil pipe.
a. Make sure that there is no foreign matter on the mesh of the oil control valve filter.
b. Install the oil control valve filter to the oil pipe union.
c. Install 2 new gaskets and install the oil pipe (on the head cover side) with the oil pipe union.

NOTE:
Remove any oil from the contact surface.


d. Install a new gasket and install the oil pipe (on the cylinder head side) with the oil pipe union.

NOTE:
Remove any oil from the contact surface.







e. Install the bolt (A) to the timing gear cover.

Torque: 10 N-m (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf)

f. Tighten the oil pipe union (on the head cover side).

Torque: 57 N-m (581 kgf-cm, 42 ft-lbf)

g. Tighten the oil pipe union (on the cylinder head side).

Torque: 57 N-m (581 kgf-cm, 42 ft-lbf)

4. Install new timing gear cover No. 2.
5. Confirm that engine oil level is correct.
6. Start engine and confirm that there are NO oil leaks.
