Introduction

Some 2005 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles may exhibit M.I.L. "ON" DTC P0456 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (very small leak).

This may be the result of a faulty refueling valve diaphragm located on the charcoal canister assembly. The charcoal canister manufacturing process has been improved.

Applicable Vehicles

^ 2005 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles with 1ZZ-FE or 2ZZ-GE engines produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date. For California specification vehicles sold, registered, and operated in California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont, this repair is covered under the California Emission Warranty, which is 36 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.





Required SSTs

Inspection Procedure

Using the Diagnostic Tester, check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If only DTC P0456 is present, continue with step 1 below. If other DTCs are present, refer to step 6.

1. Using the Diagnostic Tester, clear all DTCs.

2. Using the Diagnostic Tester, perform the Automatic EVAP System Check.

^ If pending DTC P0456 is set, proceed to step 3.

^ If NO pending DTC is set, an EVAP System fault is not present or the problem may be intermittent, proceed to step 6 for further diagnosis.

NOTE:
If the Automatic EVAP System Check fails to run, perform the following:

^ Turn the ignition key OFF

^ Turn the Diagnostic Tester OFF

^ Turn the ignition key ON and the Diagnostic Tester ON and restart the Automatic EVAP System Check.

3. Using the Diagnostic Tester, clear the pending DTC P0456.





4. Using the SST (P/N 500625), pinch the hose connecting the canister refueling valve and the pump module assembly. (Refer to the illustration.)

5. Using the Diagnostic Tester, repeat the Automatic EVAP System Check.

^ If NO pending DTCs are set, replace the charcoal canister assembly.

^ If pending DTC P0456 still sets, another EVAP system fault is present proceed to step 6.

6. To further diagnose the EVAP system when another fault is suspected, refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), 2005 model year Corolla or Matrix Repair Manual:

^ Diagnostics: SFI System (1ZZ-FE): EVAP Inspection Procedure (Corolla)

^ Diagnostics: SFI System (2ZZ-GE): EVAP Inspection Procedure (Corolla)

^ Diagnostics: SFI System (1ZZ-FE (FF)): EVAP Inspection Procedure (Matrix)

^ Diagnostics: SFI System (2ZZ-GE): EVAP Inspection Procedure (Matrix)

Repair Procedure

1. Replace the charcoal canister assembly.

2. Perform the Automatic EVAP System Check and verify that no pending DTCs set.
