Repair Procedure
Follow the diagnostic procedure in the Technical Information System (TIS):^ 2004 - 2008 model year Solara Repair Manual, Vehicle Interior - Supplemental Restraint System - "B1821 Open In Side Squib LH Circuit".
^ 2004 - 2008 model year Solara Repair Manual, Vehicle Interior - Supplemental Restraint System - "B1826 Open In Side Squib RH Circuit".
NOTE:
If no concern is identified after inspecting the floor harness and the center airbag sensor assembly, please follow the repair procedure below to replace the corresponding side airbag assembly.
(Driver and Passenger Seats):
CAUTION:
^ Always wear safety gloves because the edges of the seatback frame and seat adjuster are sharp and may cause injury.
^ Work must be started more than 90 seconds AFTER the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source. If work is started within 90 seconds from disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the SRS may deploy.)
^ Installation is in the reverse order of removal. However, special points concerning installation are indicated.
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ Be careful NOT to damage the body.
1. Remove the seat track cover RH.
2. Remove the seat track bracket cover inner LH.
3. Remove the front seat assembly LH.
NOTE:
Set the power seat front vertical function to the highest position.
A. Remove the headrest.
B. Remove the 4 bolts and seat.
4. Manual Seat Only:
Remove the vertical seat adjuster knob (driver's side). Using a plastic pry tool, remove the snap ring and knob.
5. Manual Seat Only:
Remove the vertical adjusting handle.
A. Using a plastic pry tool disengage the 3 claws and remove the vertical adjuster cover LH.
B. Remove the 2 screws and vertical adjusting handle.
6. Remove the reclining adjuster release handle.
A. Raise the reclining adjuster release handle to reveal a claw.
B. Using a plastic pry tool disengage the claw and remove the release handle.
7. Power Seat Only:
Remove the front seat outer cushion shield.
A. Remove the 2 rubber bands from the back of the front seatback cover.
B. Using a plastic pry tool pry oft the 2 power seat switch knobs.
C. Remove the 6 screws.
D. Using a plastic pry tool disengage the claws and remove the cushion shield together with the cushion shield inner No.1.
E. Disconnect the power seat switch connector.
8. Manual Seat Only:
A. Remove the 2 rubber bands from the back of the front seatback cover as shown in Figure 4.
B. Remove the screw.
C. Using a plastic pry tool disengage the 2 claws and clip and remove the cushion shield.
9. Remove the front seat inner cushion shield.
A. Remove the screw.
B. Using a plastic pry tool disengage the claw and clip and remove the cushion shield.
NOTE:
Be careful NOT to damage the seat cushion cover.
10. Disconnect the 4 clips securing the SRS harness from the bottom of the seat.
11. Remove the seatback cover with pad.
A. Remove the hog rings. Then open the lower part of the seatback cover.
B. Remove the 2 headrest supports.
C. Remove the nut and seatback cover bracket.
D. Remove the hog rings and seatback cover together with the pad from the seat adjuster.
E. Remove the hog rings and seatback cover.
12. Remove the side airbag assembly.
A. Remove the 2 nuts from the side airbag assembly.
B. Remove the 2 clips holding the airbag wire harness.
13. Install the NEW side airbag assembly.
A. Place the side airbag into the seat frame with the wire harness in the down direction.
B. Secure the side airbag with 2 NEW nuts.
Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf)
C. Install the 2 clips to the seatback frame.
14. Install the seatback pad and cover.
A. Using hog ring pliers install the seatback cover to the seatback pad with NEW hog rings.
B. Install the seatback pad with cover to the seat adjuster.
C. Install the 2 headrest supports.
D. Fully cover the airbag with the seatback cover bracket place the outside strap on first and then the inside strap and tighten the nut.
Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf)
NOTE:
^ Be careful NOT to damage the cover.
^ When installing the hog rings, take care to minimize wrinkles as much as possible.
E. Route the side airbag wire harness through the seat cushion cover end.
F. Using hog ring pliers finish installing the seatback cover with NEW hog rings.
NOTE:
^ For a vehicle with side airbag, the side airbag may NOT be activated normally unless the seatback cover is securely installed.
^ After installing the bracket, check that the strap is NOT twisted.
15. Install the remaining 4 clips to the seat frame bottom using the diagrams below.
16. Install the front seat assembly.
A. Place the seat in the cabin.
Be careful NOT to damage the body.
B. Connect the connectors under the seat.
C. Tighten the 2 bolts on the front side of the seat.
Torque: 37 N.m (375 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf)
D. Tighten the 2 bolts on the rear side of the seat.
Torque: 37 N.m (375 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf)
E. Install the 2 seat track covers.
F. Install the headrest.
17. Check SRS warning lights.
18. Manual Seat Only:
Check seat slide adjuster locks.
19. Power Seat Only:
Inspect power seat operation.
20. Check seat heater operation.
21. Initialize the front passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) (passenger seat only).
NOTE:
Follow the initialization procedure in the Technical Information System (TIS): 2004 - 2008 model year Solara Repair Manual, Vehicle Interior - Supplemental Restraint System - "Initialization".
22. Initialize power systems (windows moonroof etc.). Refer to appropriate service bulletin.
Airbag Disposal:
Please refer to TSB No.55004-07, "SRS Component Disposal as Hazardous Material Treatment" for proper disposal method of the side airbag assembly.
