MIL "ON" P0717 Due to Rodent Damage (2ZR-FE/U34IE)

Applicability

Introduction

Some 2009-2011 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles equipped with the 2ZR-FE engine and U341E automatic transaxle may exhibit a MIL "ON" condition with DTC P0717 (turbine speed sensor circuit no signal) stored. The cause this MIL "ON" condition may be due to rodent damage to the A/C circuit harness near the sensor connector. A harness repair kit has been developed to simplify the repair and improvements have been developed and implemented in production to prevent rodent damage from occurring. Please follow the repair procedure below to address this condition.

This TSB applies to ALL 2009-2010 mode year NUMMI built Corolla vehicles.





This TSB applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown.

Repair Procedure

NOTE

If DTC's other than P0717 are stored in the ECM there may be additional repairs necessary after this TSB is performed. Be sure to store necessary Freeze Frame Data (FFD) prior to clearing the DTCs in step 6.





1. Inspect the NT sensor connector and harness for rodent damage.

Is the harness damaged between the two reference points shown below?

^ YES - Proceed to step 2.

^ NO - This TSB does not apply; refer to the applicable Repair Manual section for further diagnosis.

2. Remove the section of the affected harness.





A. Remove No.2 cylinder head cover.





B. Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector and the 2 wire harness clamps.





C. Disconnect the ventilation hose and loosen the hose clamp.





D. Remove air cleaner cap sub-assembly.





E. Remove air cleaner case.





F. Unclip the harness in the location shown in Figure 7 to improve access to the repair area as shown in Figure 8.





G. Unclip the NT Sensor Circuit harness in the location shown in Figure 9 to improve the access to the bracket and wiring.





H. Separate the speed sensor connector and wire harness clamp.

I. Remove protective tape from the harness at the bracket location shown in Figure 9.





J. Cut the wires at the position shown in Figure 11.

3. Attach the harness repair kit to the engine harness.

A. Remove approximately 10 mm (0.39 in.) wire insulation from the engine harness wires.

B. Place a crimp connector over both ends of the engine and repair kit harness wires.

HINT

Confirm the wires being crimped are the correct wires (NT + (Black), NT - (Yellow)).

C. Wrap the crimp connections with the water resistant tape included in the harness repair kit. See Figure 12.

D. Cover each of the wires separately with electrical tape.

4. Secure the repaired harness to the harness bracket.





A. Align the white tape on the repair kit harness with the bracket as shown in Figure 13.





B. Secure the harness to the bracket as shown in Figure 14.

5. Reassemble the vehicle in reverse order.

6. Clear DTCs using Techstream.

NOTE

If other DTCs were stored, save the Freeze Frame Data (FFD) for later reference.

7. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repair.
