Applicability

Introduction

Some 2009 - 2010 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles equipped with a 2ZR-FE engine may exhibit a squealing noise coming from the engine compartment during vehicle operation. Please use the following repair procedure to address this condition.

Production Change Information





This TSB applies to all NUMMI built (VINs starting with 1NX) and to TMMC built vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown.





Warranty Information

APPLICABLE WARRANTY

^ This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

^ Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin.

Repair Procedure

1. Verify that the noise is coming from the V-ribbed belt.

2. Inspect and adjust the V-ribbed belt.





A. Check the belt for wear cracks or other signs of damage.

If any of the following defects is found replace the V-ribbed belt.

^ The belt is cracked.

^ The belt is worn out to the extent that the cords are exposed.

^ The belt has chunks missing from the ribs.

NOTE

Replace the generator V-ribbed belt if there is any sign of fraying, scoring, or glazing on the belt.





B. Check that the belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves.

HINT

Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the groove on the bottom of the pulley. If the belt does NOT fit properly or has slipped out, replace the V-ribbed belt. (Go to step 4.)





C. Check the V-ribbed belt deflection and tension.





If the belt deflection is not as specified adjust it following the procedures in steps 6 and 7 in this bulletin.

3. Confirm that the noise is no longer present.

^ If the noise is no longer present STOP Do NOT replace the belt. Repair is complete. If the noise is still present replace the V-ribbed belt. Continue to step 4.

4. Replace the V-ribbed belt.

A. Remove the No.2 cylinder head cover.





Hold the rear of the cover and raise it to disengage the 2 clips on the rear of the cover. Continue to raise the cover to disengage the 2 clips on the front of the cover to remove the cover.

NOTICE
Attempting to disengage both front and rear clips at the same time may damage the cover.

B. Remove the engine under cover RH.





C. Remove the V-ribbed belt.

(1) Loosen bolts A and B.

(2) Loosen bolt C then remove the V-ribbed belt.

NOTICE

Do NOT loosen bolt D.

5. Install the V-ribbed belt.

6. Adjust the V-ribbed belt.





A. Turn bolt C to adjust the tension of the V-ribbed belt.

B. Tighten bolts A and B.

Torque:
Bolt A: 19 N*m (190 kgf*cm, 14 ft*lbf)

Torque:
Bolt B: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft*lbf)

NOTICE

Do NOT loosen bolt D.

7. Inspect the V-ribbed belt tension and deflection.

Refer to step 2 in this bulletin for inspection procedure.

8. Install the engine under cover RH.

9. Install the No.2 cylinder head cover.

Engage the 4 clips to install the No.2 cylinder head cover.

NOTICE

^ Be sure to engage the clips securely.

^ Do NOT apply excessive force or hit the cover to engage the clips. This may damage the cover.

10. Confirm the noise is no longer present.
