Exterior Lighting System
LIGHTING (EXT): LIGHTING SYSTEM: SYSTEM DIAGRAM
1. EXTERIOR LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM
The exterior light control system has the following functions:
Manual Light Control
High Beam Control
Passing Light Control
Front Fog Light Control
Daytime Running Light Control
Low beam headlight Indicator Light Control
High beam headlight Indicator Light Control
(a) Manual Light Control
Manual light control illuminates the low beam headlights and taillights (parking lights, taillights and license plate lights) by manual operation of the light control switch.
When the light control switch is turned to the TAIL position, the daytime running light relay assembly turns the taillights on. When the light control switch is turned to the HEAD position, the daytime running light relay turns the low beam headlights and taillights on.
(b) High Beam Control
High beam control illuminates farther ahead than normal.
When both of the following conditions are met, the high beam headlights come on:
* The low beam headlights are turned on by manual light control.
* The dimmer switch is in the HIGH position.
(c) Passing Light Control
Passing light control illuminates the high beam headlights in order to allow an oncoming vehicle to become aware of the vehicle's presence while driving with poor visibility.
When the dimmer switch is turned to the HIGH FLASH position, the high beam headlights come on.
(d) Front Fog Light Control
When both of the following conditions are met, the front fog lights come on:
* The low beam headlights are turned on using manual operation, and the high beam headlights are off.
* The front fog light switch is on.
HINT
The fog lights will turn on only if the high beam headlights are off.
When either of the following conditions is met, the front fog lights turn off:
* The front fog light switch is off.
* The low beam headlight switch is off or the high beam headlight switch is on.
(e) Daytime Running Light Control
The daytime running light control is designed to automatically turn on the high beam headlights during the day to make the vehicle more visible to other drivers and pedestrians. Daytime running light control is operated by the daytime running light relay.
HINT
The daytime running light relay dims the high beam headlights when operating them as daytime running lights.
The daytime running light control will begin operating when all of the following conditions are met:
* The ignition switch is ON.
* The engine is running.
* The parking brake switch is off.
* The light control switch is in OFF or TAIL.
The daytime running light control will be cancelled if the light control switch is manually switched to the HEAD position during daytime running light control operation.
(f) Low Beam Headlight Indicator Light Control
The low beam headlight indicator light is controlled by the daytime running light relay.
The daytime running light relay will send a signal to the combination meter to illuminate the indicator when all of the following conditions are met:
* The ignition switch is ON.
* The low beam headlights are on.
When either of the following conditions is met, the low beam headlight indicator turns off:
* The ignition switch is off.
* The low beam headlights are off.
(g) High Beam Headlight Indicator Light Control
The high beam headlight indicator light is controlled by the daytime running light relay.
The daytime running light relay will send a signal to the combination meter to illuminate the indicator when all of the following conditions are met:
* The ignition switch is ON.
* The high beam headlights are on.
HINT
When the daytime running lights are operating, the high beam headlight indicator does not illuminate.
When either of the following conditions is met, the high beam headlight indicator turns off:
* The ignition switch is off.
* The high beam headlights are off.
