Flex Plate: Testing and Inspection
U250E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION / TRANSAXLE: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH AND DRIVE PLATE: INSPECTION
1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
(a) Inspect the one-way clutch.
(1) Install SST onto the inner race of the one-way clutch.
SST : 09350-32014
09351-32010
(2) Set SST so that it fits in the notch of the torque converter assembly hub and in the outer race of the one-way clutch.
SST : 09350-32014
09351-32020
(3) With the torque converter assembly standing on its side, check that the clutch locks when SST is turned counterclockwise and rotates freely and smoothly when turned clockwise. If the results are not as specified, clean the torque converter assembly and recheck the one-way clutch. If the results still are not as specified, replace the torque converter assembly.
(b) Determine the condition of the torque converter assembly.
(1) Check that the following conditions are met:
* During the stall test or when the shift lever is in N, metallic sounds are not emitted from the torque converter assembly.
* The one-way clutch turns clockwise and locks when turned counterclockwise.
* The amount of powder in the ATF is not greater than the sample shown in the illustration.
If the results are not as specified, replace the torque converter assembly.
HINT
The sample illustration shows approximately 0.25 liters (0.26 US qts, 0.22 Imp. qts) of the ATF taken from a removed torque converter assembly.
(c) Replace the ATF in the torque converter assembly.
(1) If the ATF is discolored and/or has a foul odor, thoroughly stir the ATF in the torque converter assembly and drain it.
(d) Clean and check the oil cooler and oil pipe line.
(1) If the torque converter assembly is inspected or the ATF is replaced, clean the oil cooler and oil lines.
HINT
* Apply compressed air (196 kPa, 2 kgf/cm2, 28 psi) into the inlet hose.
* If there is a large amount of fine powder in the ATF, add new ATF using a bucket pump and clean it again.
(2) If the ATF is cloudy, inspect the oil cooler (radiator).
(e) Avoid damaging the torque converter assembly and the oil pump gear.
(1) If there is any damage to the end of the bolt for the torque converter assembly and to the bottom of the bolt hole, replace the bolt and the torque converter assembly.
(2) All of the bolts must be the same length.
(3) Bolts with washers must be used.
2. INSPECT DRIVE PLATE & RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Set up a dial indicator and measure the run out of the 6 portions around the torque converter assembly fitting surface.
Maximum runout:
0.30 mm (0.0118 in.)
(b) Check the drive plate for damage.
If the runout is greater than the maximum or the drive plate is damaged, replace the drive plate.
