Dear Volkswagen Dealer:
This is to inform you of a voluntary safety recall campaign involving some 1993-95 model Volkswagen Jetta, Golf and GTI vehicles. This recall involves proper clearance of the right rear brake line.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
Excessive clearance between the right rear brake line and axle housing could result in chafing of the brake line against the fuel tank. Repeated chafing could eventually result in a leaking brake line.
VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER RANGE
The vehicles affected by this recall are within the following vehicle identification number range:
3VW _ _ _1H_PM001156 - 3VW _ _ _ 1H_SM103121
Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial numbers of affected vehicles. Use of the V-Crest campaign inquiry system will allow you to determine whether or not a particular vehicle, within the above VIN range, requires the corrective work.
NOTE:
Volkswagen will not reimburse under this recall action any duplicate recall repair work or a repair outside the VIN range.

DEALER INVENTORY VEHICLES -
LIMITATION ON SALE OR LEASE OF CERTAIN VEHICLES
Section 154 (d) of the National Traffic and Motor Safety Act of 1966 mandates that dealers correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle which fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or which contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety. It is, therefore, imperative that any vehicle in your used car inventory which is affected by this recall and shows the UD code in the V-Crest campaign inquiry system is corrected prior to sale.
REMEDIAL ACTION
Check proper routing of right rear brake line; realign or replace brake line if necessary.
OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING
Volkswagen of America will mail first class notification letters to all known owners on or about September 18, 1998. A copy of the owner letter is included in this circular.
VEHICLE ALLOCATION
Prior to owner notification, we will mail you a computer list containing the VIN's and, where applicable, the names and addresses of affected vehicle owners located in your dealership's area of responsibility.
PARTS INFORMATION
Beginning in late September 1998, we will begin to ship to all dealers an initial supply of replacement brake lines.
Additional required brake lines must be ordered by you from your facing parts depot.
DO NOT OVER-ORDER any of these applicable pads; otherwise, you may be required to return excess inventory.
SPECIAL TOOLS
To check the proper routing of the right rear brake line, a special measuring tool, VWM 047203, is required. This tool will be sent to you together with the allocation list prior to owner notification and will be free of charge; however, it will remain the property of Volkswagen of America, Inc. It is your responsibility to safeguard this measuring tool.
REPLACEMENT TIME/REIMBURSEMENT
To ensure prompt reimbursement, use the correct code applicable to the work performed on the specific vehicle. Recall claims will only be paid for vehicles which show the recall code UD in the V-Crest system at the time of the repair work.
UD Data Entry Procedure
For all vehicles which, according to your information are unreachable, please enter into the system one of the codes indicated as applicable.
SUPPLEMENTAL REIMBURSEMENT
Supplemental repair/reimbursement is not applicable.
ADDITIONAL CAMPAIGNS
Some of the affected vehicles may also be involved in additional corrective actions. Please check your V-Crest campaign inquiry system so that any additional work can be done simultaneously.
RECALL VERIFICATION
For verification, always check your V-Crest recall inquiry system. The V-Crest system is the only campaign verification system; other systems are not valid.
DEALER OBLIGATION
To ensure customer satisfaction, as well as minimize inconvenience to your customers, dealers are urged to service each vehicle at the scheduled service appointment time, and make sure that each vehicle is returned to the customer washed and cleaned inside. Do not let any customer wait longer than necessary during the recall service of the vehicle. Every effort should be made to reduce inconvenience to customers.
This recall service must be performed by the servicing dealer irrespective of mileage, age of the vehicle or where the vehicle was originally sold.
