Condition
No second gear, no fourth gear or vehicle will not move in any forward drive gear.
May be due to broken retaining lugs for selector plugs of B2/K1 which causes the selector valve to partially protrude or completely fall out of valve body.
Note:
Only between transmission build date range 01085 -> 19125. (see transmission identification) are affected.
Code letters and date of manufacture (arrow).
Production
Plug material change from brown to white (also --> Illustration 38-A011) beginning transmission build date 20125 (20 Dec. 95).
Service
If condition exists:
- Obtain repair kit Part No. 01M 398 998, ATF screen gasket and ATF pan gasket.
- Drain ATF, remove ATF oil pan and ATF screen (see appropriate Repair Manual for Models listed).
Using an angled Torx T20 driver -A- --> Illust. 38-A011 (commercially available):
- Remove valve body plug (turn counterclockwise to remove) for limit selector (arrow -1-) and install white plug from repair kit.
^ Plug-1-is secured by turning clockwise 1/4 turn.
- Remove valve body plug (turn clockwise to remove) for manual 1 selector (arrow -2-) and install white plug from repair kit.
^ Plug -2- is secured by turning counterclockwise 1/4 turn.
Note:
Replace plugs one at a time (ensures that springs behind plugs are not mixed up).
Springs behind plugs are NOT interchangeable and must always be installed in the same location!
Plugs are correctly installed when the outer plastic lugs are in the vertical position.
- Remove valve body plug for B2 selector (arrow -3-) and install white plug from repair kit (turn counterclockwise to remove).
- Remove valve body plug for K1 selector (arrow -4-) and install white plug from repair kit (turn counterclockwise to remove).
^ Plugs -3- and -4- are secured by turning clockwise 1/4 turn.
- Install NEW ATF screen gasket into valve body.
- Firmly press ATF screen onto valve body.
- Reinstall ATF oil pan.
Note:
Always replace pan gasket.
Always press spacer bushing into new gasket.
^ Torque pan bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft lb)
- Fill and check transmission fluid level -> appropriate Repair Manual for models listed.
